I had to replace my wing mirror because it kept falling off!!! I have 1 1998 Ultima. It was not easy to do but I now have a problem The wing mirror can be moved OK but when I open the car doors the wing mirror moves in a downward direction. Has any one any idea what might cause this. Many thanks. Raymond

Sounds like part of the wiring loom is damaged - possibly earthing when you open the door ? The wiring loom to the doors runs through a rubber gaiter and the constant flexing every time the door is opened can cause the wires to break - insulation might look fine but the wire breaks internally - I've had this on other Fords.

If it's the nearside I suppose it could be to do with the wiring for the auto dipping in reverse, does it stay down or come back up when you shut the door. The 2 plugs are colour coded - I don't know what would happen if you accidently connected black to white & white to black. One of the plugs is solely for auto dipping. I notice you say car doors - do you mean any door causes it to happen?

I see you've posted this twice with slightly different wording, it's quite likely a900one's answer in the other thread is the answer.

Hi thanks for info, the door is an offside, I had absolutely no problem until it was fitted, good idea about earthing will have to check. It goes down when I press the button na only comes back up when you reset using the internal knob.I don't know if any one has done this but feedin the wiring is a nightmare!!! Thanks for info Raymond

I've had to feed the wiring for mirrors etc... through doors & door posts on my Sierra - there are easier jobs I have to say ! A lot fewer wires than on a Scorpio but still a pain. Just a thought but you say the mirror moves when you open the door - does your car have the puddle lights ? Could be that you have a couple of bare wires touching or a bad earth ?
