Engine Mounts 1998 Ultima 2.3

Hi

I've posted recently that I've needed to have some work done on the prop shaft of my car.  It was vibrating quite badly under load but tended to even out at higher speeds.  Anyway, work has been done and progress is now very smooth I am pleased to say.  I'm not sure if I mentioned that I was told an incorrect BMW part had been fitted; a replacement from Germany was subsequently fitted.

The people in Bristol who did the work on the shaft made a comment to the garage I use that it would be best to check the engine mounts on the car to ensure that the engine had not moved and, if it had, would put stress on the shaft.  They've suggested I go back.

Question for the Scorpio team:  Are engine mounts an issue for these cars, or a particular engine?  Having spent a fair bit on getting my car straight, I don't want to risk putting anything at risk.

Your comments will be very welcome.

Thanks and best

I don't know about the mounts at the front as I've not had cause to touch them, but the rear mount under the autobox has slotted holes for the fixing bolts as does the prop support bearing.

When I tilted the engine/box down recently to replace the loom I left the autobox bolts a little loose & gave engine/box a good shake to let it settle where it wanted then tightened the bolts. I then did the same with the prop support bearing bolts.

Whether or not that's necessary I haven't a clue but I'm not getting any vibration.

As Snoopy says - I've never seen mention of engine mounts.

I suppose they may have been saying check none of the bolts are loose or brackets broken rather than suggesting making adjustments.

Thanks, that's good to know.  I spoke with the prop shaft guy today who said he'd just like to check with a digital level to make sure the prop is true.  He said that he'd come across Scorpio's where mounts have begun to fail.  I'll have it checked for my peace of mind and also it means that I've some protection going forward with the work that has been done on the prop.

The other interesting thing is that I found out that a rubber coupling has been fitted which needs lubrication.  Not sure I like the sound of that but he said that it would last forever.

I've much to learn in the ways of the Scorpio!

Cheers

Never heard of the rubber couplings or "doughnuts " as they are refereed to needing lubrication. Have a read through the TIS workshop manual on the main site . I put a link to the prop shaft etc on my other reply to you .
I repost it here for your information.

Engine mounts very, very rarely go on RWD cars.  I wouldn't bother taking the time (or spend money) checking them unless there were obvious symptoms pointing to a failed engine mount(s).

Hi All

I hope you're all having a good Xmas.  I wanted to give an update on this and also to ask another question.

I recently took my car to the people who did the work on its prop shaft as they wanted to see it in situ and, using a digital spirit measure, make sure all is well.  I've been told that alignment is slightly out, possibly due to the transmission mount showing signs of failing (hairline cracks).  The engine mounts are ok, by the way.

I've already spend over a grand on the car and the prospect of spending yet more on isn't attractive. I will do though, if it means that the car is going to be in tip-top condition.

So...does anyone have any comment to make on a transmission mount failing/needing to be replaced?  Would anyone have a Ford item for sale of know where best to get one from?

Having entered Scorpio ownership it's a bit of a shame that I've had to spend so much money on the car.  Still, i guess I'm not the only one to be in this situation!

Thanks and a happy new year to all.

Matt

Ps.  Have you seen the white Scorpio on eBay for just shy of £5,000?

The rear mount is a fairly substantial steel assembly so I assume the hairline cracks are in the rubber support that is riveted to it.
The centre bearing is mounted in rubber to allow for some movement of the engine/box. The TIS workshop manual that Snoopy posted a link too doesn't mention any special attention to aligning the box & the bearing support other than "Align the centre bearing free of stress and tighten the bolts."
There should be a washer each side between the centre bearing & floor, make sure they have been fitted - they're mentioned in the TIS & the location can be seen arrowed here in picture 8:
