Sunroof gear

Has anyone bought a repair gear off ebay. I have now had the second motor strip the gear, I have freed it up as well.  There are two different sellers, one is cheaper, and I dont know the quality.

Fairly sure I have a spare sunroof motor in my stash if you want one...

Thanks for the offer but I still have one left in stock . I think it is time to fit the new sunroof I bought some time ago, that is if the screws will come out.

Probably wrong of me to say this, I'm not a 'Purist' so, I reverted mine to 'Manual' sunroof, much more controllable, and easier to maintain. Mondeo of the era is a straight swap.

As I thought, one screw, front n/s of sunroof, wont move  any tips. Got all the rest out without to much problem, lots of rust around screw mount.

Try Plus Gas . I've found it will work where others fail.
Heat is also a great 'easer' of rust. I'd try a soldering iron held directly on the screw head.

There are also some freeze sprays which are supposed to 'shock' the seized up screw / nut / etc...
Halfords do one - Shock & Unlock, Loctite - Freeze & Release, Wurth - Rost Off Ice
I'm sure there are many more !
Don't be tempted to use an impact driver as the parts to which the sunroof fix are largely plastic mouldings which break quite easily...I speak from experience...

As you say most of it is plastic, I changed one on the Granada scorpio, and I think most of them went round in the plastic. I will look into the freeze things as the brass insert is going round in the plastic now, they even put locktite on the screws to make things more of a problem. I have been spraying the screws for about 10 years now, as I wanted to replace the glass panel at some time.

I was thinking that drilling the screw out could be a problem if the brass insert is turning.
If you remove the complete sunroof assembly - I've done it a few times on Sierra's which I think is very similar, not too difficult - just make sure you protect the paintwork at the front of the roof with old blankets or a duvet.
You might be able to lock the brass insert with a drop of superglue - then you might stand a chance of drilling it.
I used copper based grease on the screw threads when I put it all back together.

Well I tried the freeze spray, did nothing  So I drilled it out, a 3mm drill first, then a 4mm which made the screw head fall off. I managed to tap it 4mm, the screws are 5mm, as I thought \i may mess it up if I tried to tap it 5mm. The roof is now in with a new motor gear, £7 from ebay, and working again. I was not able to get the problem screw very tight as it went round again, but it seems ok. Now that it inside most of the time, I have just built a 6metre x 8metre garage, I hope it will stay rust free longer.

The motor went past the internal stop, and had to be replaced with my last spare. I would not recommend the gear, at £6.99, off ebay.
