Red Key

Since I bought the Scorpio I ave always been slightly worried that I only have one key and one fob, especially as I have always assumed that the key I had wasn't  a Red master but a black slave. And its been on my longer term must sort at some point.

Anyway by chance looking at the key today I noticed that it has a red rectangle set into the back edge, and just wondered if this is what is meant by a "Red Key" I had always assumed that it meant one with a complete red head, but have I  been lucky?

The red key is the master, the red rectangle I believe is just a cover where the chip is inserted.
You can program new slave keys if you have the red master key.
Instructions are in the owners manual on page 41.

Ah many thanks! so it is a Red Master and all I need to do is get a slave key cut and then program it!

I'll count that as lucky!

I suggest you follow the instructions in the manual before getting a key cut, if the dash light doesn't do what the manual says you don't have the master.

It is possible get a clone of a slave key (the chip is copied).

For what it's worth any chipped key can be programmed as master using Ford's diagnostic system -nothing different about the red key, just programmed as master.
The keys aren't altered during programming just the individual chips remembered.

To clarify. The 'Red key' is just that. The entire plastic section is RED. As Mike said the black keys just have a red section which indicates the chip. Smiley

Thanks will PM, just need to do some reading to work out what I do about the actual key pattern, i.e. can I get a new key(s) cut and insert the chips from existing keys and then program them, or as I think the correct terminology is register them with the car.
Still not 100% clear how it all works, as you can see from my response Smiley

You could look at this site and see if it solves your problems.

There are listings on ebay such as this, you need to buy the key & pay extra for cutting to your pattern - they have a red one:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/Deane-Security?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

This one doesn't have the chip but you can get an idea of how the insert fits:

Trouble is you can't register them with your car.
If you were nearer I'd offer to do it.

It looks as though you can use Forscan to create a master, but you need to register:
https://forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=839

Can't speak for Forscan but when using FDS 2000 it says you need 3 keys. This isn't strictly true in that you can use the car with just one key but it's slightly vulnerable in that you don't need the master to add the next 2 chipped keys, they will automatically be added to PATS.

Details of PATS here:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pats.htm

"If the engine starts normally but the LED stays on, wait for one minute. The LED may then flash a code 2:1. This is showing a ‘fault’ that there are less than 3 keys programmed into PATS. One of more keys need to be programmed to stop this code."

Just realised the significance of this, but I've probably got hold of the wrong end of the stick.

But if Timson's can cut a key and clone the transponder in one go. Then I have an identical key to the existing one. So if I loose one I can repeat.

As far as I can see this is in effect what having a Master Red key would do for me, except I can't register my own key. Or am I missing something critical that may bite me later?

Sounds right.
When I had one cloned it was fatter than a normal key.
I would have thought they can clone one of their clones should you lose the normal one.

As far as I can see the only problem would be if you decided to have one set as master.
As part of programming all existing keys are dropped from memory.
You would need to have 3 normal chipped keys otherwise you will get the dash light staying on as mentioned in my previous post.
If say you had 1 normal key & 2 clones of that key & you set one as master you'd effectively have 3 masters as PATS can't tell them apart - you would only have 1 key programmed into memory.

Sound like a reasonable plan would be two clones cut at same time and test, and then use them and keep my current original safe, in case I need to get a further clone cut in the future.

Well nothing like having the security of having a spare working key, and unfortunately I have nothing like the security of having a spare working key.
Local Timsons could do the transponder coding, but their Tibbe key cutter was broken, but kindly offered if I got a new one cut they would do the clone. So ordered one from Dean Security giving them the key code, it arrived last Friday I tried it in all the locks, it worked perfectly, so just had to take in to Timsons next time I went to town, since then I have lost it!  Embarassed
