Manual Gear Knob removal.

The lift mechanism, for selecting reverse, under the gear lever knob has effectively disintegrated. I can sort it BUT need to remove the knob in order to do so. This is well tight and before I attempt removal would be pleased to know if it unscrews in the conventional way but just needs some 'persuasion'  or is secured in some other way?

Mike, I haven't a clue but looking at other cars with an MT 75 box it may pull off or unscrew - but whether that applies to a Scorpio....

Consulting my trusty Mk3 Granada Haynes manual - for cars with MT75 manual gearbox it says the gear knob just pulls off - but may be tight.

Just Make sure there is not a little grub screw around the back holding it on.
They are sometimes hidden away.

Thank you guys. I've tried both approaches before without success so I'll wait a bit longer and see if anyone else pops up with an answer. It certainly doesn't respond to any form of reasonable approach either way.
I can't believe that with all the work being done on these cars no one has had to remove a gear knob!
Tompion makes the point I thought of initially...........it is a Scorpio!!..... bound to be different or b....y awkward!

OK, now you are testing my ageing grey matter, but I messed with this years ago on my Ford Puma 4X4 24V Cosworth.
I'm pretty sure they are assembled as a single unit, and you cannot strip them down without wrecking them ..................
IIRC the Gear Lever is assembled at the factory and the Knob is fitted last, it is bonded with some kind of "rubbery insulation", once removed you will never get it back on.
I shortened my gear lever, and did away with the lift for reverse toggle, as my 4X4 MT75 Gearbox has a reverse interlock inside it.
Then I cut a suitable thread on top of it and fitted the Pumas Aluminium Threaded Gear Knob, that worked fine in a rally car, but not really what you want in your Scorpio.
Your easiest solution is to try and find someone who has a good used Gear Lever, or try FPUK to see if they have "old stock"

The idea of being bonded on and all one unit follows exactly the details that Snoopy provided. Only on a Scorpio could they do that!!
I think there is a way of overcoming the problem but I need to have a good look. Certainly don't want to risk wrecking the knob as it is essential to allow the sliding mechanism to go up and into the hollow under the knob.
Thanks again. At least now I can give up on the idea of removing the knob itself.
