Zapper trouble - on a Merc

Friend of mine has an old (18 yrs) A-class Merc and has lost the keys. Along with the keys was the zapper that controls the alarm etc. To cut a long story short he now finds the zapper is no longer available in spite of MB flogging him a replacement key to the tune of 240 quid. Can anybody suggest a possible solution to perhaps adapting another zapper to communicate with his car's electronics or are there such things as after market universal zappers? Otherwise the thing will have to be scrapped. Any help gratefully received...not least by said silly Billy friend

get him onto the UK Merc forums... plenty of great help and advice there. Not sure how easy it is to re-code an alarm fob though... is it a genuine Merc one as I thought the factory fitted alarm was activated/deactivated with the key fob. If its an after market alarm, just get a good auto electrician to disable it and remove it
