Auto gearbox no gear or drive selectable

Just a quick line in case anyone has the problem I did today.
R plate 2.3 estate auto, started and ran fine took car some 15 foot down the drive stopped in "P" turned engine off and loaded car, restarted no problem went to select "D" and nothing just a very slack gearstick, so I felt a fool called local spanner and came around to help within the hour.
Problem was the locking clip on the front of the long rod on passenger side of the autobox was missing and the rod had fallen off the securing spigot, luckily had a substiute clip to resecure the rod back in place - job done.
