2.3 Ultima characteristics

Not really problems but more questions now I am using my car more regularly. Is it typical for the climate control to belt out heat after a mile or so, continue to do it for a couple of miles, and then revert to normal air conditioning without changing any settings? The second one is that in local pottering around it is showing about 21 mpg on the trip computer, it is running great so is that what I should expect? Thanks in advance

I think it might be worth giving the climate control a reset and see if that clears the " heat " problem. Details can be found HERE

Local pottering - assume this is mainly short trips - 21mpg sounds about right from when I had my 2.3 Scorpio.

I agree with Mike, mpg seems OK - I actually find my r reg cos estate more economical!! Perhaps it take 50 mph in it's stride whereas the 2.3s we have can't decide if 3 or top is neededand struggle a little. To reset the a/c you just need to follow the procedure section, some times a few attempts are needed, drive the car between these as it can adjust whilst being driven (as with mine anyway). HTH Roy

It sounds to me as though your heating is working OK, assuming "belt out heat" means once the coolant is warm enough (usually about a mile) the fan speeds up until the cabin reaches the preset temperature at which point the fan slows down & the heat tapers off. Depending on outside temperature when heat is still required generally the centre face vents go cold first & the side ones stay warm. As I don't like the centre vents facing me when they go cold I usually leave the centre vents directed towards each other & up towards the roof, this helps get the whole cabin up to temp & cancel out the draught when they turn cool.

I agree with Tompion- it sounds as though the climate control is working as it should. All 3 of my Scorpios do the same. As soon as the coolant has warmed I can get air in excess of 55C until the cabin temp approaches that set, with the output air temp gradually falling and the fan speed gradually reducing.

Many thanks for all the replies, due to two unexpected failures on my usual daily car the Scorpio is getting much more use, the aircon has been delivering plenty of cold air in the warm weather and the mpg is gradually creeping up
