This is what I do, can't be sure it helps but always passed on emissions.

Ran for a month on BP Ultimate petrol (about 9p per litre more expensive)

Full can of injector cleaner when down to half tank of petrol

Thrash down motorway for 20 miles or so immediately before test.

Ask tester to do emissions first while engine still very hot.

As I say I can't be sure it helps but it might for minimal cost.

Mine were high to start with but they some how got them in, have the MOT regs changed recently. The normal checks may help, air filter, clean ?, clean the maf, and as Tony says fast/high rev drive before taking it in. Have you got the fail sheet to put on here, or reg.

Not sure how much it helps with emissions but clean the MAF.
People say intake air leaks can be a problem on the cossie so check all the hoses, T-pieces etc.
Have you run a diagnostic to check for codes especially oxygen sensor ones & see what sort of graph you get for them.

It could of course be the cats, my tester comments on how good emissions are since last time I fitted a new cat.

Ok had T now here's whats the matter

it seems just the C  O  is the problem,  the Hc and lambda are fine

on 1st fast idle only went down to 1.27 (target 0.3)

on 2nd fast idle went down to 0.71 (target 0.3)

Natural idel hit 0.5 (max pass )

Cruising etc the car shows 25-28 mpg regularly and even mixed round town etc will show 22 ish, the other that flew through on Monday is only showing 21-22 on mixed use, dont know if the comparison is useful, but the cars are 2 years apart but both same model.

Next steps anybody?

Note this car has the obliglitory uselees engine temp guage, would this affect the readings, I believe there are 2 engine temp sensors and the other non dash one is what the "brain" uses.

I've never had a problem with the temp gauge, if ever the needle's not stayed in the middle changing the stat has fixed it but then it's easy to do on the 2.3.
If the engine temp sender is wrong that may well affect emissions.
If you have a laptop a scan should be the next step using Forscan free software & an elm scanner.

Hi Tompion,

Never had the pleaasure of the famous R reg temp guage, quite frightening at first appearance.

The needle generally sits mid way then decides to do as it pleases, sometimes alright for weeks then on a longer journey (generally in the mddle of nowhere) it plays up and  falls away never reaching the stop at the bottom of the guage, and very gingerly creeps up a little, but sometimes take your mind off it and "bingo" it's back where it should be.

Had this on virtually all bar M reg cars (had a few as you know)

We fixed the last one with the screw in engine temp sensor at the front of the motor.

Just was curious if this would make the car run rich, (a petrol smell was reported by local spanner as they tried to get it through earlier today)

Shame really as this was gonna be a keeper, but if I cant fix this at reasonable cost it has to go, by comparison the Monday  "lovely car" went through with 0.00 CO on its emissions!!

If the sender is telling the computer the engine is cold then it will richen the mixture much like leaving the choke on on older cars.

There are different Ford part numbers but I believe this is down to the wire length not the sensors.

What did the temp gauge show during the test?  The tester should abandon the test if the engine isn't up to temp.

Have you tried an "Italian tune up" just before the MOT?

See my note (4 above0 if you haven't had an R reg you may not have encountered the failing temp guage, tends to show properly temperature if you use the mileage zero button and scroll through, but the guage needle has a mind of its own.

It's generally cured by new temp sender on front of engine.

Have had this with at least 3 scorpios

Glad it passed Roy, you would think if garage 1 had it down as Granada 2998cc, then the pass standard would be lower than for yours, is that the old Essex V6? What figures did garage 2 quote for the CO anyway?
One problem I never had with mine was the temp gauge, always nice and steady around the middle.
