Have you had the car up in the air with the wheels hanging? If you have it can cause this effect which is to do with air in the power steering system.

Jack the car up so that the tyres are just!! touching then turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a couple of times. DO NOT hold it on lock as it will strain the rack seals. The reason for taking the weight off the wheels is so as to not overstrain the system. It has been done by putting the front wheels on some very loose gravel or even on soggy newspaper! It is simply a way of allowing the wheels to turn without exerting undue pressure on the seals in the rack. The lock to lock should remove any air.

I'm sure you will let us know how you get on. There is a mention of this issue on the site somewhere but I have failed to locate it. No doubt Tompion will do so!!!

Thank you Dave, I knew you'd locate something! I was looking for something similar but with a bit more detail about resolving the problem. I had hoped the Fault Finder section would give a link to the one I was after but no. I have a feeling it was a post by Eric R many years back! Certainly we have unearthed enough to hopefully solve the current problem. Stay safe.

Thanks Guys, having read that thread we shall drive it and see. problem was the car had been stood for over a decade, the recomissioned just before it came to us, previous guy did quite a bit and dodged a lot to sell it. Hence both front calipers were shot, this then produced the effest i reported so being lazy 9ask PJ hes met me) we shall drive it-good exccuse anyway, and report bak.

If you can find a large clear space just drive slowly and work from lock to lock. Worked for me.
