P1761 fault code.

I have been experiencing gearbox problems along with a flashing OD light on my 2L auto. I have cleaned the MAF, but to no avail. The car will not change from 2nd to 3rd gear unless I back off the throttle and let the revs drop to around 2,500. I was given an error code by a Crypton tuner (HO2 sensor gone) of P1761. Can anyone tell me if this code really means my gearbox needs an overhaul, can I just change the number 3 solenoid or should I still try the MAF?
Thanks
Barry Huh

Waders,
Clean the MAF anyway, because it improves mpg and smooths the gearbox changes, but I don't think it is responsible for the DTC you mention. The dirty MAF normally produces the P0733 Incorrect ratio error - not the same thing at all.

P1761 means that the solenoid is not performing properly. It is either not operating or is jammed on. Yes, a gearbox specialist would be able to change the solenoid itself from outside the autobox. Ring round for some quotes.

The Outcome.
So, after a longish chat with an auto specialist Huh, we came to the conclusion that Shift Solenoid #3 is not Huh at fault!! Shift #3 opperates 3rd to overdrive only Cry, and my problems definatly 2nd to 3rd, thats #2 solenoids job. Ok, time to get some more OBD done.
Battery disconected for 10 mins then an 85 mile drive to get OBD done.
 Grin(thanks Dave and Chris) Grin.
More codes.... P0113 Intake Air Temperature circuit High Input Shocked(to be looked into), P1270 Engine RPM or Vehicle Speed Limiter Reached Undecided (oops thats my fault) Undecided, and P0756 Shift Solenoid No. 2 Performance Grin Grin Grin.
No #3 solenoid probs Grin!!!
Back to auto shop and I have #2 solenoid changed. This has sorted out my "no change" problems 100% Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin.
I Feel the P1761 error code must have been generated from my originaly dirty MAF confusing the  HuhEECV Huh (flashing O/D light and maybe the P0113 fault had some influence?) or perhaps it stuck open/closed but i never noticed!!!  Anyhow now I have all the gears again Grin, I'm off for a drive Grin Grin.
Thanks for all the help guys, you know who you areTongue.

I can recomend an auto shop in north london if anyone is in need!!!  GrinGenuine Man Grin, such a rare thing these days.(only paid £220inc as quoted but took up his time and knoledge).

Barry,

Glad your drive the other night paid off - a good night too anyway eh?! Sounds like you can't beat a good auto box specialist - also sounds like he should be on the recommended page on the main site for the benefit of others?

I've always had a problem with the change from 1-2, 2-1 (it's a little clunky) but cleaning the MAF, replacing the MAF (for another reason) has made no difference. Reckon I'll try an auto box place around here - just as soon as Julie has forgotten what the work at the MOT cost  Grin Grin Grin and I've renounced eBay for a while  Grin  BTW, not suggesting that cleaning the MAF isn't the way to go - if it's easy and cheap on these cars then that's gotta be a good start! The FMD diagnosis  "needs a new box" was not an option - it's not that bad.

It's always "nice" to see the codes for the first time - especially when they all make sense.

Hope this "Hampshire Xmas Do" comes off - will you be bringing the Postman Pat van down for some OBD? (Preliminary OBD code analysis: "It's a Vauxhall...")

Cheers,
Dave

Dave, Grin
if you can find somewhere to stick your plug in Tongue, we'll bring Ellie's postie van along! Huh
I think your "it's a Vauxhall" is as close as OBD will ever get! Roll Eyes
