Is this any good ??

Hello all, I'm looking at buying a Scorp & having read a lot of this site thought it would be a good idea to get something to check for OBD codes so I bought one of these before I go looking at cars, could you give me your opinions please

http://www.auteltech.com/code1.htm

I paid less than £30 for it off of fleabay, that included insurance, so if it's poop I ain't lost too much.

Something else I thought was good was this site

https://www.mycarcheck.com/

does a reasonable thing for a tenner in my opinion

I ended up buying one of these: -
http://www.auteltech.com/code1.htm
I think for the price I paid (£28 ) which included shipping from the states & postal insurance it is a good little unit to have.
I used it when I bought my 2.3 ultima recently and it came back with "NO CODES" which tied in with what the guy who was selling said was the outcome when he had a scan done at a meet last summer.
My personal opinion is that for the price I think everyone that is looking to buy a car with the OBDII socket should take one of these with them and ask the seller if they mind you using it Smiley

Just read through this post & there is a bit of de-ja-vu creeping up on me hehehe

hi bizzay im interested to know what you think of your purchase as im thinking of buying one ? i do not own a lap top so it looks like the best solution
only thing is as it produced no error codes at all how do you know if its working at all ?  suggest you try unplugging the maf sensor and using it to see if it then sends no error code ( or any other sensor) such as water temp sender

Yes as stated in one of my posts above I would say that, for under £30 it is worth having one, even if you just keep it in the glove box.

When I had my Head Gasket done, I put this reader on it and it came back with 2 codes, which I cleared (expected after being taken to bits) took it for a spin and tried it again - it came back with a code which told me that the camshaft position sensor had a circuit fault, so I look about and find that when it was put back together the wire going to the CSPS had been trapped under the top cover, I released it and cleared the code and it's not returned since.
I would recommend anyone to have one just for checking purposes and while going to buy another car Wink

Cheers mate.
Seeing as i've no OBD experience & can't really afford a laptop at the moment, then this product seems like a good idea.
Thanks for the advice Smiley

Got it the other day....plugged it in.....no codes....thats good....now lets test it.
Unplugged the MAF....plugged in the OBD reader......no codes Huh
Unplugged ECT, IAT & temp guage sender.....plugged in OBD reader........still no codes Huh

Money back guarantee....yea right...all the way from the states Roll Eyes.
For £18.50 you wouldn't bother.
It may come in usefull one day to bang nails in with. Grin

I would be tempted to contact the guy and see what he says, mine worked as stated above after being in the garage so maybe you ended up with a faulty one Huh?

Hi JC,
just unplugging things may not generate a code. I believe some codes in OBD2 don't appear unless certain thresholds are met or that the problem occurs for at least 25 drive cycles.

Can you scan the data as well as the codes (as OBD2 does)?

Looking at the data can suggest problems even when no codes are generated.

No harm in contacting supplier for more info though.

Maybe you're right Pegasus. Smiley

Maybe I just haven't got to grips with it yet & maybe I am being slightly impatient. Roll Eyes

It's just that everything electrical/electronic I own seems to be on the blink at the moment........the new oven has a broken fan....... the dishwasher broke & the new one which took 2 weeks to arrive was all bashed up on the side, so that's gone back......the freeview box makes strange fizzling noises.....my TV remote has a mind of it's own.......my broadband connection keeps dis-connecting........the toaster's had it.......my Bosch cordless drill takes 5 hours to charge & only lasts 5 minutes........my Bissel carpet cleaner sounds like an angle grinder.........the Dyson's motor has burned out......& the ceiling fan in the front room sounds like it's full of broken seashells. Cry

So when I bought this thing on Ebay & couldn't get any joy out of it I just assumed it was another dodgy piece of electrical junk. Angry

I must learn to more positive.......so okay, the reader showed no codes, so maybe there were none to show, maybe I really do own a Scorp with absolutely no issues whatsoever..........& all those things I think are wrong with it are just a figment of my imagination............hmmmmm............ Grin

Hi JC,
Gawd - it doesn't rain but it pours AND they don't make 'em like they used to (and any other well worn cliches)

Yep, its very frustrating. My Scorp stalled 3 times on Saturday  Shocked and I've never had any codes. Thought I had it sorted when I changed the fuel pressure regulator   Angry

Scan only shows slight negative fuel trims so gonna have to try a few other things (cats, TPS, IACV seem ok).

Still, if we never had any probs we wouldn't appreciate the good times. Do you believe that  Undecided

Cheers

I picked up GS400 scanner made by the same manufacturer.  It is more expensive but has lot more features.  I am happy with it.
