OBD2 Lead - No Connection

Hi, As I have been unable to resolve my problem with the loss of overdrive on my 95 2l 16v, I decided, after reading about it on here, to buy the OBD11 lead from car code. It arrived today but I am unable to get it to connect. I have read on here about needing a serial number for the VE software, but one was not proveded, nor can I see anwhere to input one if I had one. I have checked that there is 12v at pin 16 and earth at pin 5 in the socket, but am now at a loss. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks Graham

Thanks for that Armin. I tried that, ignoring the usb stuff as you said as I am connecting directly to the serial com port, still no good though. The box at the bottom of the screen says its getting no response for each of the protocols it tries. Does anyone know how I can test the socket on the car? As I said earlier I have checked that 12v and earth are ok. I'm going to give up for now as the temptation to take a lump hammer to it grows ever stronger! Graham
