are you able to get a scan done like this.....
MAF
LTFT
REVS
LAMBDA SENSOR(S)
run it in idle for 5mins, giving it a rev to 2k rpm every minute (a/c off).

Hi Andrew, That's our problem, No fault codes show up even when the idle revs 'die' almost to stalling point. Paul 'marked' the scan each time it did it but still no code!!. Will have to wait until we meet up again to get another one done. If I recall correctly Paul checked each of those items and no fault found. The strange thing is if I gently release the throttle from say 2500 revs it doesnt 'dip' to the 3/400 mark. If I just take my foot off and let it drop of its own accord it will drop to 3/400 and then immediately rise to 1000 ie 'normal'. We did have the air con off throughout the test. Thanks for your comments which I am sure Paul will see shortly and let you know if there is anything I haven't covered. No other issues with the car which still returns 27-28 on average with very few long runs. Best wishes. Mike.

the only thing i saw that was a bit odd was the spark advance. seemed to jump about a bit, but it's not something i've really scaned a lot of before.
maybe check the wiring to the crankshaft sensor
if i can think of anything else, i'll let you know.
btw, how's the sparkplugs? correct gap and nice and tight?

Andrew, Have checked as you suggested. Found that the wiring to the coil packs was poor and so have replaced that and the section to the camshaft sensor. Took it right back to the injector 'joint'. All soldered and heat shrinked etc plus managed to dismantle and re-use the three connectors!. What a fiddle. Have taken some photos so will post when I get someone to show me how!!.The sad thing is it hasn't cured the fault.

I've rechecked your scan through Excel and compared it with the 1 we did in March:
The LTFTs are in the negative, after running at high revs then dropping to idle as Andrew suggests the readings at idle (around 800prm)on the 1st scan were between -6.3 & -8.6%, on the recent scan the readings were around -6.3%.
A possible cause is my old friend - the fuel pressure regulator
What do you think, Andrew? (if it is, at least its easier to get at on your engine than mine)
I've looked at the Spark Advance - they always seem to jump about a bit, at least on the scans I've done.
Unfortunately, the spreadsheet hasn't recorded the points when the revs dropped low - I'm thinking it was the fact that we were simultaneously running "enhanced codes" so there appears to be big gaps in data converted to the CSV file. Next time, I wont run enhanced simultaneously. Anyone else noticed this?
Looking at the data I can't think of anything else but others will have more experience.

it sound like the idle valve is faulty. does it do it as bad it the valve is disconnected?
what about under load (all electrics on)?
