Using VE with a USB

This description is for use with Alex Pepper's system although it may work with others
In order to get this to work you need to ensure that both the laptop system and the VE software are interfacing with the same port - see below. (I bought the USB/serial interface from Alex P at www.obd-2.com for $20 but this should work with any other appropriate connector – ‘Belkin’ connectors are recommended by some VE users)
Ensure the driver is installed:
1. downloadable here , follow on screen prompts until install finished, then reboot.
2. After rebooting, plug in the adapter and PC will find “new hardware” and install correct driver (you may get some prompts)
Configuring the laptop (or PC):
3. With the USB adapter plugged in PC, go to Start menu (bottom left of screen), click Control Panel, then System (you need to be in ‘Classic’ view to see contents of Control Panel)
4. Click the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager
5. You should see a category called Ports (COM & LPT), click on this and see a device called Prolific USB-to-Serial (COM x) or something similar (if you don’t see “Prolific …” then driver wasn’t installed properly – see step 7), where x represents the COM number assigned to the port where you’ve plugged in the adapter (on my laptop I’ve 3 USB ports numbered 3, 5 and 6.). Make a note of the number.
6. Some serial devices and applications can’t work on a COM port higher than 4 (I haven’t tried it yet). If you find yours doesn’t work you can reduce it to a number found in step 3 in Device ‘properties:
• go to Device Manager, right click on Prolific … and select Properties
• click on the Port settings tab
• click the Advanced button
• in the lower left corner is the box where you can select the COM number (ignore the comment “in use …” if it’s the number you choose)
• If this still doesn’t work, also under the Advanced settings you can try backing down the sliders or disabling the FIFO buffer by un ticking the box (I didn’t have to!)
7. If it still doesn’t work you can try uninstalling the driver (go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and select PL-2303 USB-to-serial) then reinstalling (I had to do this). And starting from beginning.
Configuring the VE software
8. This can be done before connecting to the car
9. On first use you will need to enter your user authorisation code, then
10. On the top toolbar go to Options, select Gateway,
11. In the protocol tab, check (tick) the following:
• ‘Ford PWM’ (and ISO if a combi)
• ‘Time out’ should be 2 or 4
• ‘Autoreconnect’
• ‘Clear cache on connection’
• ‘Maint. Enhanced login’
12. In the interface tab, the following should be ticked:
• ‘Baud rate’ should be ‘57.6’
• ‘Speed’ should be ‘120’
• ‘Interface’ should be ‘blue route’
• ‘Direct ISO’ & ‘Fast TriCAN’ should be ticked if used
• Importantly, the numbers in the ‘scan tool rs232 serial output’ and the GPS rs232 serial port must be the same and the same number as COM port in step 5. (mines currently running on 6)
The connection sequence is:
1. boot up PC
2. connect cable to PC (correct port) and car
3. Is ignition on? It should be!
4. Run VE
5. click on Connect in the top toolbar. It should connect straight away (mine does). If not check the connections. See the site advice sheets for further info.

I'm having trouble connecting with VE Software and the car. With my old PIII laptop it all worked ok following the above procedure's. But that laptop has gave up the ghost, so i bought a new one. Now i've followed the abov instructions to the letter, but it still won't connect just get the window which say's "Scanning all interfaces. Initialization is taking place." Dispalys the terminate button. With the things to make sure are connected listed at the bottom. Have checked everything dozens of times. The only thing that doesn't happen is when i first installed VE Software and first run it it didn't ask for my authorisation code and i cannot find anything that allows me to input it.
When i click the terminate button it asks me to "Save as" but i click the cancel button then a new window appears asking me to enter a "New User" ID No, not sure if this is it or not as i am using the latest VE Software from Alex Pepper. No matter what i enter in this window and click OK the next window appears and it says "Not registered" and i click the Ignore button then its back to the main start up wimdow again.
Anyone got any ideas as i need to do a scan because my LPG system is playing up and won't idle at all.

All sorted now, just un-installed and re-installed the driver and it connected first time.

Brilliant help this thread has been just done my first reading this eve and without scorpiomans help and this from pegasus wouldnt have got on..the ports had to be the same in the device mangere for my dell to play..only one fault code so far too lean..

If you cut the link down to finish with /usb.exe you’ll get a download window for a self extracting file that may be what you want.
What version it is & whether or not you want to take the risk with your computer is up to you.
I ran it, you get a file called USB_SETUP.EXE with associated files
It shows this in the install window

Tompion has described the method to download the installer. It's probably an update so go for it (instructions probably need updating too!)
I've checked my files (which on my old Dell was sooo slooww!). All I have is a link to 'uninstall' the driver - it's a Unix link. It's possible the driver is lurking somewhere in the PCs heart but I can't find it even though the settings are to 'show hidden files'
So, although I've kept all I've downloaded from Alex P's site since 2005 there is no sign of the driver.

After some trial and error. I have succeeded to communicate and read error codes via USB adapter.
The above driver failed to work on my new laptop.
I tracked down a generic Prolific USB to Serial driver.

Unzipped and installed driver.
In Device Manager under Ports (COM & LPT), found Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port (COM3) had no driver assigned.
After updating driver from resource file all was well.
Had to sync port numbers with software and finally read any error codes.
Only one code error was present: P0141 OSHC (B1S2).
Relates to Oxygen Sensor Heater Circuit, Bank 1 Sensor 2.
Cleared and will rescan later in the week to see if it reappears. Otherwise, new sensor will be ordered and fitted.
