Ok, the free easyobd software (v2.45) connects fine and reads the dtc's (there aren't any) but it's a bit basic and no ABS section that I can see.

Vehicle explorer 1.51 doesn't connect which I expected as it's not an alex piper lead.

Any other ideas?

This probably won’t help with your ELM320 but I've just been experimenting with an ELM327 lead.
Just tried FORScan (2.1.1 beta) from here:
http://forscan.org/

Much to my surprise it correctly recognised my Scorpio, recognised the ABS fault when I disconnected a rear sensor & I cleared the code with the software once I reconnected the sensor.

They say:
“Latest version which has ELM320 v2.0 support is FORScan v0.9.2 beta.”
They don’t appear to have that version available on their website.

Update
V 0.9.2 for the Elm 320 is here at the bottom of the page:
http://forscan.org/download_old.html

It also says Support of ELM320 under V 1.1.0

Tompion is this ELM327 and FORScan 2.1.1 beta.
Windows 7 compatible or is it XP only?

Thanks

Hi Adam,

My laptop is XP so I've not tried it, however I've just plugged the ELM327 USB lead into my PC with 64 bit Windows 7 & it found the drivers & installed them without me putting in the setup disc.

I've just looked on the setup disc & that has Win 7 32 & 64 bit driver versions.

I've just installed FORscan on Win 7 & that appears OK although I can't test it.

It was £17 but with regard ABS I’ll have to get back to you over which one I bought off ebay.

Just need an ELM327.

Dave will any ELM327 from eBay suffice?

Thanks

Ok - tried the forscan software (latest version) and got error "no ELM device found".

I'll try and track down that 0.9.2 version.

Or maybe I might just buy an ELM327 lead.

I was just trying to find out some information about it before saying which I bought. Most of them are clone chips indeed mine appears to be. Have a read here:
http://www.glmsoftware.com/ElmScan5Compact.aspx

& here:
http://forscan.org/faq.html#qobd1

Details of the chip here (they never even made ver 1.5 that you see advertised):
http://www.elmelectronics.com/obdic.html

I’ll post a bit more soon.

I was also looking for one that could read ABS. Many say not ABS & by the looks of it the software they come with is pretty basic & not capable of reading ABS.
The Forscan software is way better than the bundled stuff but only suitable for Ford, Mazda, Lincoln and Mercury. It doesn’t do as much as Vehicle explorer  with the Alex Peper lead but what it does do is very good especially collecting all the codes in one place without having to go to an enhanced page.

The lead I bought was this one although he’s changed the picture (it did have an ABS symbol on it which was probably a mistake as he didn’t mention ABS in the text):
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271183717115

I didn't really expect it to read ABS so that was a bit of a bonus.

There are cheaper ones that look the same, some say not Windows 7.
I notice that many of the ones claiming to use the non existent V1.5 chip don’t support Windows 7 & support Ford New ocus 2006 – not heard of the ocus Smiley

In theory they should all read most protocols but there are several forum threads about clone ones having problems that can be fixed with a bit of surgery. All I can say is mine reads and clears engine & ABS codes on my Scorpio – not tried it on the Rover yet but I don’t expect it to read ABS on that with the supplied software.

Added
If you look at this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321158486667

When you scroll down the circuit board they show looks the same as mine, the other board looks like the ones people have had problems with.
Note: apart from saying not ABS & cars later than 2001 this one has the plug the other way up which means the lights will be underneath on a Scorpio. The locating lug should be the same side as the led’s although of course what you see in the picture isn’t always what you get.

Added
It wouldn't connect to the Rover.

Adam,

I just sent a message to everest-direct & got a good response from them:

Hi,
I notice the listing no longer has ABS on the picture.
Can you tell me if the currently listed cable is the same?
I tried this on my Ford Scorpio using the free ford software from http://forscan.org/ & much to my surprise it read the ABS codes. I want to post some details on a forum. I appreciate you probably won’t want to commit yourself to what the cable can do so all I’m asking is the cable still the same.
The forscan software is excellent for my Ford & works a treat with the cable (it also reads PATS & central locking).

Regards
David
-----------------
Hi David,

Thanks for your message. Yes, the cable is exactly the same. There are many different ELM scanners on eBay which look the same on the outside but are quite different on the inside. Our cable has a proper FT232RL chip and other circuit board features which improve coverage and stability greatly. That's very interesting that you got ABS working using the Ford software - thanks for the details on this and good work! We did remove ABS and Air Bag symbols from the picture as ELM doesn't cover this for all models. We will always stock this particular ELM model as it's not worth us selling the cheaper version with less coverage and reliability.

Kind regards,
Patrick

Dave,

That's great work, thank you.

I will purchase this exact lead from everest-direct and post my findings upon arrival.

Hope it works.

Some screen grabs of FORScan:

I often have some CCM codes, I think it may be because I often lock the car while the boot is open.

Dave,

Success  Wink
Elm327 arrived very quickly from everest-direct.
Performed set-up on Windows7 64 bit and installed FORScan.
Connection was established immediately after hitting the connect tab.
Carried out a quick scan in the garage and here is a screenshot of my DTCs in PCM.

Looks like downstream Oxygen sensor needs attention.

Codes: P0158, P0171, P0174, P1260 all flashed up in PCM.

Also a hat full of  B's DTCs in CCM B2100, B1551, B2108...etc
Not worried about the CCM DTCs as Toad CAT 1 fitted to car. Which i suspect is the root cause of these.

Great find Dave.

Thanks

Glad it worked Adam

You can set up a graph to see what the oxygen sensors are doing.

P1260 is Theft Detected - Engine Disabled. I suppose if you clear the codes & it comes back it might also be related to the Toad.

A nice thing with Forscan unlike other software is it doesn’t seem phased by the com setting. I connected on com 2, closed it, changed the port to 9, when I opened it again it connected straight away.

Hi Adam

Click the third button down on the left.
Click the middle tab at the top (Oscilloscope).
Click the third button along bottom left.
The select PIDs dialog will open:

Select items you want (if you start typing oxygen in the filter box at the top it'll narrow the list down to the 4 sensors) & click the > arrow between the panes to add them to the right pane.
Click the tick button along the bottom to save your selection.
Now back in oscilloscope view click the first button bottom left (play) to see the live data.
If you've only just started the engine it'll take a minute or so before a sensor starts switching.
You can zoom in/out with the buttons bottom right.
Below is my upstream sensor starting from cold.

You can ignore the bottom graph as I just added it to see what happened (Ford didn't fit a downstream sensor on my car).

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the information.

Here are the graphs in order for O2S11,O2S12,O2S21 and O2S22.
Is O2S12 showing a fault?

Thanks

A screenshot of all cleared DTCs.
I can fully recommend this set-up of ELM327 and FORScan beta 2.1.1.
