Cossy snobs!

I'd just like to say there's a lot of people on here who think their cossies the be all and end all...
Having always had big, fast cars with big engines etc and getting sick of paying for the fuel, I bought a diesel model. It has the same comfort levels etc as the cossie but costs much less to run and has more low down torque for less gear changes - which I would've thought most people buying this type of car would be looking for? The scorpio is never gonna be a sports car no matter what engine you stick in it - doesn't even handle well at all in fact. I bought my diesel because I wanted a sofa on wheels that'd pull my boat when needed and otherwise be a very comfortable motorway car. If you want a saloon car that's cheap, comfy, faster than the cossie granada and handles much much much better I'd sudgest buying an old vauxhall senator. I've had 3 of those and even the 12 valve is faster than the cossie scorpio - and more economical, reliable, better built. The 24 valve is much faster with lotus cylinder heads - 160mph book figure - and believe me they will do it. The Senator handles better than the newer Omega and is faster too. The last one I had I put a turbo on the 3litre for near lotus carlton class performance for a couple hundred quid mod.
I'm not anti-ford, quite the opposite, and definetely not anti big ford car having had 2 cortinas, 2 granada mk2 2.8i ghia X's, 2 old type scorpios and my latest 2.5td ultima... but if you want a sports car - buy one! If you want comfort, have comfort and economy. Sports as well? Don't kid yourself. The sierra and escort cosworths btw - a different matter alltogether. I've had these too and they do handle well and really go...0-60 in 4.5 seconds, 380bhp anyone? But they're turbo'd and designed for the job. I'm keeping my diesel and gonna get another senator - and put my turbo'd motor back in (once it's been bored to 3.6, then with yank long throw crank to take it to 4.2 litre, 24 valve, 580bhp)!
Simon.

How to win friends and influence people eh?
Well, you're entitled to your opinion and you have your tastes, just like we all have ours.
But please don't come on here calling us snobs cos we didn't all go out and buy a diesel. That's not on.  Angry
I love my Scorpio for various reasons, not just because it has the Cossie lump in it.

Hello Simon,

I've had 24v Senators, a Mk 3 Granada Scorpio Cosworth, and other big engine cars right back to the Rover P6 3500, and now I've got an Ultima Cossie estate.

I like the Senators very much.  They are better than the Scorps in some ways, but not in others - swings & roundabouts.  It all comes down to personal taste at the end.

With any car there is a balance between what the designers get right and what they get wrong.  With the Senator, they got most things right (apart from the front grill!).

However, I got the Scorp because they did not make an estate version of the Senator and I wanted the comfort and load carrying capacity of my Mk3 Grannie Cosworth estate but with Sennie performance (the Mk1 Cosworth engine did not give me this, but the Mk2 does).

I have to admit that I find the Scorpio a smoother and quieter ride, and the Cosworth (Mk2) engine gives me performance that matches the 24v Senator.  The Senator is more economical and handles better.  On the other hand, you can buy an 'S' reg Scorp, but the latest Sennie you could get would be on an 'M' plate, and then it would be an ex police!

On balance, I (personally) would go for the Scorpio Cosworth.

Roger.

What Simon really means is he looked for a Cossie and couldn't find one so bought a diesel instead!! My last 3 cars have been oil burners including a 25k Rover 75 top range jobbie. My Cossie is my first (ok second) 2nd hand car for over 10 years and I would take it to anything I've had in the past. Diesels are good on fuel, but I don't pay for mine that often so that don't matter. I don't want a sports car because they are only driven by middle aged managing directors who want to relive their youth. I want a big car that is fast, newish and cheap to buy I got one as for the senators, well they are really just a big cavalier aren't they??!!

Well you could call Senator owners "wanna be Scorpio Cossie owners, but i haven't got the BALLS to get one cos they're too fast for me to handle" or is it that "Mummy said i can't have a Cossie cos they're too fast for my LITTLE BABY WABY POOHS.

Simon "GET A LIFE" mate, you can't just come on here to slag people off, cos in your hour of need it just might be one of these "Cossie Snobs" that helps you out and saves you £££S in the process.

Simon - I just can't decide what your agenda is supposed to be mate, you say you've had big fast cars and got sick of paying for fuel so bought a diesel -

makes sense thus far

Then you end up saying you're going to get a turbo'd motor bored to 3.6, then with yank long throw crank to take it to 4.2 litre, 24 valve, 580bhp - Very economical i'm sure 50mpg is well within reach..

And no matter what you put in a Senator it will always look exactly what it is - a dated Cavalier on steroids. Loads of boyracers round my way have Senators and Carltons as they're SO old and cheap to buy.

I think everyone is missing the point,
I think Simon has a point, the Scorpio is never going to be a sports car, in the same way as its never going to be economical. For gods sake ford never even advertised the fact it had a cosworth built/influenced motor in it, hence no badges.
If I wanted to go quick round bends I would buy a Focus RS , but I dont, I want to go sideways round roundabouts, smoke the tyres away from the lights and drop it out of 4th at 110mph and accelerate away, thats why I drive a 24v, to see the look on someones face who has spent £30k when you leave them.
You see i could flannel and say I bought the car for the mid range torque, the motorway cruising, the engine refinement, nope i bought it because for a big car its quick, i get all the other stuff from my 2.3.
But lets look at the bigger picture, in performance accross the range the cosworth ultima is the range topper, the most expensive, yes we all agree??
So given your own personal aspirations we aspire to the car we want, and for some of us the 24v is the car we want.
I know i have the 2.3 as well, but thats just too nice to get rid of.
So a comparison, at the new price advertised by ford, and the money not being an issue, running costs not an issue, which scorp would you go for??

Ok we pay more for fuel, but you show me an equivalent large executive car 5 years old that cost just under £30k for less than 10% of its value, and giving the same level of comfort and performance, and ill buy it,fuel costs dont come into it, the running cost are covered by the money I save buying a cheap ugly car that the public have shunned.

If I wanted MPG I would have kept my puma, but I didnt, I bought a Scorpio.

Now buying an Omega, that would just be stupid.

Now if money wasnt an issue and I could buy a £30k car and not worry about fuel costs and insurance I know what I would buy.
http://www.carclassic.com/html/DM27.htm

Then I would go looking for Scorpio Cosworths who thought they were quick.

Calm down gentlemen, its a car, we drive it and plow money into it, thats it
