HAVE YOU GOT ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE INSTALLED ? #. If the answer is yes Nortons ARRRRRRRRG , I don't trust it , It has caused nothing but problems on several of my mates XP systems.... Personaly i would unistall it and download AVG 6 personal edition from .. www.grisoft.com it is free to non corporate users i.e the general public at home. very easy to use.
Also forget Windows firewall. install ZONE ALARM again it is free to personal users think the address is www.zonealarm.com .... once installed you will be amazed at what it stops....... VERY EASY TO USE.
Also install a spyware removal tool such as adaware 6 you can find it by doing a search in Google.
Happy to answer any computer questions you have.

Yep I'd agree with you there... Nortons AV stuff is pretty much a pile of poo... I use AVG 6 myself and have had no problems, in fact AVG has caught some stuff that got missed by Sophos full Corporate edition that I use on the network at work.
Zonealarm is ok too as it's interface is easy for the novice to use but I have found that when recommended to the average PC user they tend to answer yes to every question it asks... ie "do you want anonymous.exe to access the internet" Doing this gradually opens all the doors that the firewall has closed by default and you end up with a nice firewall acting like a courteous doorman and letting everything in and out. Negating all the firewalls' properties.
Personally I use Kerio Personal Firewall but it has a much more complicated interface to use and is probably too much for the average PC bod. There is a lot of paranoia about having a firewall, I know many people who haven't ever had one near their PC but have no problems whatsoever but on the other side of the coin people who are firewalled up to the gills can still have adware probs etc through Firewall misconfigurations.
It's a bit of a lottery this internet stuff...
..to firewall or not to firewall? imho it's basically up to personal choice but I will say that XP's built in firewall is pretty much a waste of time, even with the "enhancements" supplied by SP2 so steer well clear of it (switch it off... )
just downloaded it found only 3 tronjan horses, so it up and running don't know much about pc's haven't got a firewall just take my chances, but i have got to be a lucky guy because I a drive a scorpio Lee
From time to time I'll do a scan with Spybot search and destroy, it sometimes picks up some stuff the others missed.,
Adware picks up 90 to 100 items everyday even with WinXP SP2, Firewall turned on, Norton uptodate, and Zonealarm going. its mad out there.
If you dont have good AV/ADware programs running on you system it like leaving your car open and the engine running for people to get in and take control.
Have a look at the Firebird browser, since I've used it for the last 12 months, adaware and spybot never find anything, the only time they do is if I have to use IE6 (rarely). Also thunderbird email is supposed to be a more secure email program, from the same site.
If you are on broadband then invest in a router .("rooter") not ("rowter"). Even if you only have one PC,the most effective firewall you can get (except a pair of scissors!). A 2 way one only costs a few quid.

As well as adaware download and run spybot. Spybot will pick up things that adaware does not. Between the 2 you will keep your hard drive free from spyware.
I also have setings set so I have to approve any cookies that a web site wants to leave on my PC. You would not believe how many usless cookies sites try to install, and most work fine without them.
