We know the Scorpio was a big disappointment for Ford in the UK. But did Ford also produce the Scorpio in other countries like the US, Germany and Australia, and if they did , did it perform better ?

A sales disapointment maybe but was well regarded by Ford people and their dealer management at the time for their own use. It was a European product. It may have been shipped to other markets but not in any volume. With a life total of 98,587 http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/revisions.htm Bulk of vehicles a clean split between UKRHD and Germany LHD the marketing suits probably decided that running with a Jaguar instead would be a better move. Fords experience of shipping european cars into the US had been unhappy. XR4 shipped as Merkur as a premium product was expensive and not as reliable as US produced products. Other problem at that point was that similar class size in the US were six seaters and Ford in Australia were building muscle cars like the Falcon. GM s strategy is to keep exec saloons as the top of the pile for selling a range of vehicles into companies down to the Corsa. Ford by surrendering their top of the range product probably reduced their chances of whole company sales so it was probably a poor move. Anyway I guess we are the winners. Geoff

They should never have given up on the Scorpio. I reckon they should've stuck to their guns. And they may have just been proved right with it. Still, it must be difficult to keep it going if it ain't selling.

True Everyone critisised the styling, but when Ford dropped it, so many others copied it and claimed it to be their own Eric makes a comparison at the foot of this page... CLICK THIS BIT

In the US, if a Ford Model is not selling too well they just titivate it up a bit , slap a Mercury or Lincoln ( owned by Ford ) badge on it and re-sell it as a new , more upmarket model. An option not available to Ford Europe.
