It's getting too expensive...

ATM we are clearing a load of old debts but the Scorp isn't helping   Sad

It's eating money now with the new discs, pads, wishbones etc.

Done the gearbox oil change and although better it still waits a second or two before engaging reverse. According to my expert this is an oil seal on the reverse/3rd gear clutch that needs replacing but sadly it's a box rebuild that sorts it. Won't get worse but won't get better either.

I am now a bit tired with it and to be honest.. although I love the car... if someone made me a reasonable offer i would be sad to see it go but it would ease some financial probs we have.

She's perfect in every other way and has all the Ghia toys with Leather in black to match the Panther Black paint.
Aftermarket five spoke alloys and a drop down DVD player for the back seats with remote headphones...

It's down to the point where the gearbox glitch is the only problem ...

Don't want to see her go... but at the moment we can't afford the extravagance of a second car that needs so much attention.

i suppose it's a case of the never ending 2 when buying a second hand car......
1 is depreciation
and
2 is maintainence
i think most of us now have gone past the first one,and the 96/97 cars are now coming up to 80-100,000 miles, this is when things can start to get a little expensive, bushes, joints etc.etc....
wish i could offer some words of advice, but i dont think no one can....
pretty sure barry has said it all
"skint" 1 year "flush" the next....
still waiting for my "flush" years, when they happen,i'll let you all know Wink Wink Wink
good luck though george, hope it all works out for you....

when i was under training in the RAF to drive the Alvis Salermander Air Crash Truck. a hugh and very heavy truck, wider than a double decker bus. could only go on Public Highway with a RAF Police escort. unless it was going to an accident. then all rules are dis-reguarded.
Well that was Automatic, fluid coupling, no clutch.
I was taught by Rolls Royce the makers of the engine.
We where all told, to count up to three before moving  the gear selector when going from forward and reverse or the other way around.
I remember this to this day, and when I reverse my Scopio's cars off my drive, before I move the gear lever in to forward, I count up to three. (it don't take long) then I never end up with a clonk or thud.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.  What does one do at a time like this?  Undecided

Well, if someone had turned up at my place and offered me 20 quid for mine, I'd have taken it! That's how bad I felt.

But you have to look at these things that need doing and think, "Well if I get rid of it, how much can I expect to get? And then once I've got my 1500 quid or however little it will be, what on earth will I get with that?"

As lovely as some of our cars are, they're worth practically nothing.

My advice would be to stick with it if you can. I mean, if the gearbox appears to be the only problem on the horizon. If there's other stuff on the way, it might be a different story.

Well Vulcan, you aren't the only one considering cutting his losses at the moment.

I've just received the good news that the 'box is knac***ed and quoted £900 for a fitted replacement. This is on top of the £200 just spent on a steering rack and the £500 estimate to sort out the air con.

Lots of other niggles like the 'dim' alternator warning light, intermittent heater blower and broken drivers door lock (all common faults I know).

Maybe this would all be OK if it wasn't for the 16mpg I am getting at the moment (200 miles on a tankful is not funny!!....new box will help, but was only getting 18-20 anyway!)

All-in-all the Scorps a bit of a money pit....and its not even done 60K yet!.

Some serious thinking to be done over the next few days...keep it or part chop it?.....

Is it me, or are the Scorpios a lot more delicate than the Granada?? Had a 2.0 DOHC 1990 for 6 years and 80K+ miles....apart from tyres and discs only needed to replace head gasket and radiator!...and it'd do 35mpg on a run.

It's a shame that the costs are so much for you Vulcan and Chad. Following the trouble I had in my 1993 Granny scorp auto with the autobox I can understand. I'm pleased to now be running a manual.

I hope you can find ways to keep them. As Bertieand Bon Jovi said - keep the faith.

I too had a scorp granny dohc auto. biggest load of poo. went thru 3 boxes. the last one cost £780 to exchange/fit. i sold the car for £800....... oh and a head gasket ....... and a £400 toad alarm..... and the air con never worked.........  so maybe the scorp not too different. Cheesy

 Keep the faith

AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Decisions, decisions...still can't decide whether to bite the bullet and get the jobs done that need doing or just get rid.....only problem is we've been spoilt by the Scorp..there's nothing out there that has what the Scorp has....if only it all worked at the same time!! Grin

Can't bring myself to spend nearly £2K getting a car sorted thats worth nowhere near that, unless I'm going to keep it for a while....and then i start thinking of 18mpg....and then i think OK, its going and i'm going to spend that £2k towards getting something more economical...

See what I mean, you go round in circles for ages thinking about this!!

AT WHAT POINT DO YOU DECIDE ENOUGH IS ENOUGHHuh?

Forgot to add....only thing thats got my attention so far is a Xantia 1.9TD Estate....5 years old and low (60K) miles....STOP LAUGHING.....I'm quite excited at the prospect of 45mpg

Pretty good space wise and its got most of the toys....plus theres that trim lever in the middle to play with the suspension....

Anyone got any experience with these things??

it's worth it cos they're great cars, they stand out and you can really enjoy driving them. drive goes to the wheels it's supposed to and you can fit people in in comfort. I daren't add up what i've spent on mine, but i love it and i'm gonna keep hold of it for as long as i can. I wanted one years ago but couldn't afford to buy or insure it. and now i have one  Grin

that's what i like about scorpio's, rear wheel drive, i can't stand those front wheel drive cars. I understand only BMW make rear wheel drive now. could be wrong.
I always spend money on repairs, when i was attached to certain cars. You say to yourself well I will spend this money then everything will be fine and I got a real good car, then something else goes. So a repeat performance, then its the same and the same all the time. When is the best time to say enought is enought, no ones knows.
My own view, on my cars, is i going to keep them, no matter what, because the condition is like new as regards body and inside.
Except that I got four, I don't need four, so on the 1996 2.0 estate, I got it in my mind as its done 138,000 miles that if this one goes wrong to the tune of say £1000 or more. (say Auto gearbox or the like), I will do a madmanspcorio and rip it apart, but not sell the parts like he does, but put then in my out house as spares for the others.
