A customer of mine bought a 1990 ( ? ) convertible when it was about 2 years old. In a short space of time he had to replace the radiator & steering rack and suffered at least one blown headgasket. He also found it bland. It was soon replaced by a TVR ( followed by several more ).
If you really want to try one, test drive it whilst ignoring the badge.

The early ones are not that nice - the later ones got much better - very nice cars to drive and last for years if looked after. Bodies are galvanised so should not rust much, interiors are pretty good generally but spares parts are horrendously priced in the UK so plan a holiday in Germany each year where they are much cheaper.

They are more of a comfortable, fast long distance cruiser than a sportscar - the TVR is more of a fun car whereas you could live with a Porsche 944 as your only vehicle. Also check the insurance quote before you buy - that won't be good news. Tyres (Z rated), brakes and exhausts are very expensive so make sure they have all been changed recently for the genuine parts - there are a lot of cheap copies being made and fitted which is never a good idea on a 150mph sportscar.

Take your time to find one owned by an enthusiast and be prepared to pay good money - a cheap one will cost you big time. Avoid the convertible and the turbo unless you are very wealthy. A good place to start with is the various Porsche clubs which normally carry ads from their members.

I enjoyed mine until it started to need repairs Sad

Was always an ambition of mine to own a 944....family and kids had other ideas.....

But as the boss says, use the enthusiasts club and get one that been cared for...and theres gonna be outlets for most parts, just as we've found on this site...there is life beyond the FMD parts counter!

Go fo it!

Don`t think I would agree with this, the chap I knew who had several TVRs was a dealer in antique jewellery ( so didn`t need much luggage space ) who drove 30,000 plus miles a year, the TVR was his only car and he had very few problems ( an earthing fault springs to mind ) and found it suited to his needs.

On the few ocassions I travelled in his 944 I found it much less comfortable than I expected, I didn`t expect the TVRs to be comfortable but they weren`t too bad. My own GT experience is limited to an early XJS ( very comfortable, fast enough for me and made in England - shame about the fuel cosumption & lack of walnut ).
