i have a desktop pc,and a laptop that are both on a broadband wireless conection running through a belkin router, now although the laptop is perfect, the desktop has become slower and also has a load of unwanted rubbish on it now,my question is this.......

can i restore my desktop right back to the beginning (i have all the discs etc.,and have done it before) and still be able to use the laptop as before with no problems, what i am worried about doing,is restoring the desktop back to as it left the shop, and then losing my connection to the router by doing this, hence not being able then to use the laptop on the net Huh....

any advice is most welcome on this one please

If it is using windows XP, you should be able to restore back to factory settings quite easily. I am also assuming that the router is a standalone unit with its own IP address and that it then allocates ip addresses to your laptop and desktop which then connect to the internet?

Restore your desktop as you would like it and if the assumption above is true, set the network card settings to aquire an ip address automatically and for your explorer settings to automatically detect settings for internet access. Should just about do it
