I may have figured out a cause for the timming chains failing on a 24V but I need some info to be sure.

If you have suffered the unhappy event of a broken chain can you let me know which one by replying to this thread. Thanks.

Right = U.K drivers side or cylinders 1-3.

Left = U.K Passenger side or cylinders 4-6

Dave/Baz, Is this what you are thinking about http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/timingchain29.htm. It does say it was the right hand chain.

Hey that is a good link, done a similar mod myself before.

Have to be very careful as the mod can cause the the chain to break if it's too tight.

Keep the answers comming please.

Martin the chains replaced have been on the passenger side Huh

Keep them comming Smiley  Thanks.

God I forgotten all about this.

Basically the two sides seem to run at different tensions, I was trying to see which side lasted best & adjust the otherside to suit as part of some other mods.

in my experiance its allways the left (passenger side) that has the problems, worn sprockets, guides & tensioners, something just osccured to me, I wonder if its got something to do with firing order / cam timing with the cams 'flipping' over when cranking with no oil pressure.
done a few BOA engines, one with 300k on it, with no chain problems, mind you they have duplex chains.
the24v seem to have very particular problems, chains, w/pumps, radiators, wiring, oil leaks, & coolant leaks to name a few, but then again all makes/models have their own faults, driving such an unusual beast makes up for it, though I am in the lucky situation of having the premises, tools & know how to keep it on the road.

O.K another one to add. One right chain snapped or jumped teeth.

Also to add to what Martin has said above, all them parts are what they changed on the engine from Mk3 to Scorpio BOB 24V Cheesy A step back I think.
Only good bit they changed was the intake.

I must admit the 1998 facelift Scorpio look bang upto date now.

Perhaps the looks where ahead of there time but the rest of the car was a let down considering how good it could have been.
Hmmm a few more years production would have sorted most of the problems.

Yes I have had the experience,L/H side.
All the guides were shot and tensioners, replaced all except sprockets sprockets. Run like a dream for about 2000mls, a nock developed on L/H camshaft area, always on tickover disappeared on increse of revs, the car still responded OK.
It always sounded ignition timeing however I stripped it out this week, I checked everything, camshaft bearings, cam follers, timing etc. Looking carefully at the sprocket drive plate(ex side) I noticed the drive pin appeared to be knocked up as if some movement had taken place, the inlet was the same.
The crank timing marks are a bit confusing as there are three, I checked the piston position for tdc and the pointer comes between the last two marks, I will make further checks to establish trur tdc.
To answer your question, worn chains, sprockets, guides, cam drive plates, tensioners, etc.I am sure if I had done an inspection when I stripped it down it might have been a bit clearer.
I would be pleased to know if any one has had my experience!!
When I find something I will let the site know. Sorry for the monolog I am getting a bit browned off.
