Dentist Rant

I am lucky enough to have had an NHS dentist for the past five years. A couple of years ago I had a crown fitted and the whole price came to a very reasonable £91.
I've just returned from the dentist ,as I broke part of another tooth (which already had a filling). The dentist explained I would need another crown. After 20 mins of drilling etc he put a temporary crown in and told me to come back in a couple of weeks for the new crown.
I booked the new appointment with the receptionist & was handed a bill for a wopping £189...."How much!!!..surely that can't be right?"......"Oh yes it is, all NHS dental prices went up on the 1st of April" she explained.....Gone up over a 100% obviously!!!
It seems to me that if you are lucky enough to get an NHS dentist, the prices can still be beyond what alot of us not so well off folk can afford. So it looks like the Great British (rotton) smile will once again be commonplace. Angry & Shocked

Apart from them flying across the room when you sneeze!!  besides, if I knock 'em out, why would I give them to the dentist, surely the tooth fairy would give me a better deal.

I think dentists are starting to be looked on as just another greedy profession. Their bills have become too expensive, and NHS dentists are nowhere to be found despite the fact that we all pay taxes for them!

Don't play into their hands though. Politely but firmly decline their X rays, hygienist appointments, crowns and fillings.

Just say "I want it out". Once a tooth has rotted it's as much use as a broken exhaust or a bald tyre..so why try and save it?

Extractions are cheaper, and your dentist has no right to demand that you fall for the "everlasting treatment to keep the tooth in your mouth scam". He gets rich, and you get poor.

I have already heard of people resorting to DIY methods:  The guy looks a bit like Jimmy Nail!!

Anyway,  I'm keeping my pliers and hammer handy along with a tin of exhaust putty for fillings!!

Always hated dentists as from when my adult teeth came through our dentist seemed hell bent on filling them! 35ish years later and I am left suspecting that he was creating a life long job for him and his mates!!

Also makes me wonder how much Mercury my body has absorbed - even remember him giving me some to play with!!!

Lifelong distrust of them - must find a good one soon though!! Sad

My dentist is very good at his job (remember when I was a kid and broke a tooth, did a complete rebuild without the need for anaesthetics, and the tooth is still good as new), but not exactly cheap. Last check up took about 10 minutes and left me £45 poorer.

My lifelong dentist has come off the NHS now and wants something silly like £300 year to be registered with them and an annual checkup.  Sod that, went and found another NHS dentist (though prices for checkups, etc. have all gone up).  She was suprised to discover I still have several of my baby teeth (more like baby fillings than baby teeth) - at least I can blame them for my childish behaviour!  Grin

Don't get me wrong, my dentist is a great bloke. We have an understanding...he doesn't give me pain & I don't give him pain.
It seems that the new NHS prices are across the board.. www.whatprice.co.uk/health/nhs-dentist.php
It seems as though it is Tony Blair's health policies that are the cause of this!!!!!!

Heard a prgramme on Radio 4  describing  how   in   the     1920/30's    it  was  very common   ( for the working class  at least )   to have all  your  teeth   removed  as it was  cheaper   than paying  for  Dental care for the rest of your days.
So  people  in   their   20's   would   send  for  the  local  travelling  dentist  and have all their  healthy  teeth   pulled  for  25 shillings   ( the idea of brushing ones teeth would not  really catch  on till  the  1950's ).

Thankfully   we've  moved  on  a bit since then. Cool

Not alot has changed much then!!.... The working class are still stuffed when it comes to dental care. If NHS dental charges continue to spiral like this, then the back alley dentist will be re-born, just like the back alley abortionist!!! Sad

Last year I spent £995 on my dental work, and up to now this year it is a meagre £95. I neglected to start a scheme at the end of treatment last year (called Denplan) which, covers all your regular checkups and any work needed, apart from laboratory work. Cost about £15/month. It also gives you cover from any dentist worldwide who is a member of this. And will repay anything you pay in the event of needing to use a non member dentist for emergency work if unable to get a member dentist

Needless to say I am doing it this year because as I get older it's more probable that more work will be needed.

It may be worthwhile to see if your dentist is part of this scheme.
