Ex Scorpio owner seeks advice

Hi guys. Well I'm still a ford guy now running one wicked Explorer! What a machine!
Only niggle is that neither front seat belt will retract automatically.
Posted request for advice/help on the X forum and the silence was deafening!
The belts arent catching on the seat squabs
Any suggestions (other than getting another scorp I cant get into cos the remote will only work in leap years) would be appreciated.
Many thanks people

Hi Keith,

first thing that springs to mind is retractors have become lazy for some reason. Whether there is some sort of adjustment you can do, I don't know. Presumably the mechanism is built into the door pillar trim so would be difficult to get at? Do you have access to any kind of workshop manual?

hi there

the belt (webbing) might be dirty. pull the belt all the way out, then clean with a damp cloth. work it back in a bit at a time.

Is there some sort of switch that leaves slack for big and portly (Super Size) Americans if so switch it off.

Actually like Andrew I would start by cleaning the belts. Bit strange for both to go, not an explorer in white is it?

The position of the seat belt anchor , (which is where the retract mechanism is) leaves it exposed to all sorts of dust and dirt. suggest taking the pillar cover off and clean it all out but do not use oil get the air line in there and see if that frees it off , otherwise I think its new belts . or second hand ones from a KNOWN source. They are supposed to be replaced if the car has been in a smash as they get strained .

Two seats with belts with equal amounts of wear, white, does it have a glass sunroof or is it a solid roof? In which case it probably spent some of its life whizzing up and down with a light bar and a crew of two. Or was at least a emergency services spec.

Why do you want them retract ?   It's difficult  enough  to  put a  seat  belt  on  when  you're  driving   if  you've   got  a mobile  to  one hand  and   a  bag  of chips in the other  Grin

 Only kidding Officer !

Geoff, it belonged to the Chief of Sussex Police. Has glass runroof and all the toys.

They replaced all of the parts in the interior that had been drilled to hold his the radios and stuff so it's like new, apart from the belts

Only thing they didnt do was replace the front grill where there are two mysterious (not) holes cut out!
