have a read of this guy here,if only someone in Britain had the nerve to do the same, maybe ,just maybe crime would fall, tough penalty for offenders, not any of this "nanny pandy" soft sentance for criminals.!!!!!!! this guy imo is doin the job right... One way of dealing with crime. TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE COUNTY SHERIFF (ARIZONA) AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER AGAIN These are some of the reasons why: Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the "tent city jail" to save Arizona from spending tens of million of dollars on another expensive prison complex. He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them He banned smoking and porno magazines in the jails, and took away their weightlifting equipment and cut off all but "G" movies (our U certificate). He says: "they're in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so they can assault innocent people when they leave. He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on county and city projects and save taxpayer's money. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination. He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only allows the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied: "So these morons will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs." He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and is therefore a waste of taxpayer money. When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back." He also bought the Newt Gingrich lecture series on US history that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that it might even explain why 95% of the inmates were in his jails in the first place. With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record for June 2nd), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed- wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts. On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing pink boxer shorts were chatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees. "This is hell. It feels like we live in a furnace," said Ernesto Gonzales, an inmate for 2 years with 10 more to go. "It's inhumane." Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. "Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things many taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves." Wednesday he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: "It's between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to walk all day in the sun, wearing full battle gear and get shot at, and they have not committed any crimes, so shut your d**ned mouths!" Way to go, Sheriff! If all prisons were like yours there would be a lot less crime and we would not be in the current position of running out of prison spaces. Sheriff Joe was just re-elected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona

makes sense, but the liberals (or the eu) won't let it happen help. i'm one for giving first offenders community service (depending on what their crime is), but we should be seeing them perform this service. even new york makes them wear bright yellow jackets. if they come back before the court again, then they feel the full might of the law. as joe says, if you don't like it, don't come back!

The guy is a lilly livered liberal in my opinion. I'd vote for the one who is even tougher!! Seriously, that is the best thing I have read for ages and I think we should start one of those Downing Street petitions and get the same introduced over here!!

Yup, I remember this chap from about a year ago. Of course, it would be seen as a severe violation of human rights if it happened over here...the sheriff would now be serving a life sentance in solitary confinement for breach of prisoners' human rights and hate crimes Oh, his mummy was scared by a spider when she was four years old...oh what a pity. Aha, this is why he turned to crime and murdered 3 people...don't bang him away and dress him in pink, hug him and rejoice for his tortured soul He gets my vote

I can't really add much to this topic, as what the guy is doing is exactly what should be done.... .............treating criminals like criminals & not like unfortunate & mis-understood victims of society, who claim not to know the difference between right & wrong I'd vote for him anyday

saw a programme on this guy a couple of years back.......all is not what it seems or he likes to portray, the man is quite an a**ewipe, the problem is he's become a tyrant. his prison ideas seem great, and we could certaintly do with something. one problem is most of his prisoners are re offenders, i remember one woman being interviewed saying she didnt want to end up back there but knew she would; little choice on the outside world, she had little education and was basically unemployable. seem to remember his regime had little or no rehabilitation. the programme then went behind the scenes of how he works, this showed a totally different aspect; young man in custody being restrained, at first quite sensibly, then a few more officers joined in, there wasnt really any need, he was actually asking for something, when he got ignored he shouted a bit, so they killed him, cant remember if he was beaten to death or suffocated, also seem to remember they left his body lying there for quite a long time before calling for medics. i could be wrong, the prog was on a while ago but i think the man suffered from an illness, possibly learning difficulties. the whole thing was on camera, his family have been fighting ever since for justice, but sheriff joe protects his officers (they havnt even been to trial and still work for him) and wont let the case go to court, he can do this because he is justice, which he makes up himself. some of his ideas with prisons seem quite good, but thats about it, i wouldnt want someone like that here, my parents generation fought a war against someone who started in a similar way.......

I suppose that puts this guy in a slightly different light, but to run a regime like he does then you would probably expect a certain degree of police brutality, especially with the more violent offenders. But a police officer, especially, should have the discipline to know when enough is enough & to carry on beating a prisoner until they die is nothing short of savagery. It brings the officer down to the level of the criminal & proves that he is not a fit & proper person to be doing such a job. But then again, if the people of Maricopa County have just voted him back in again, then they must think that he is doing something right....unless they really are all a bunch of god fearing, redneck hillbillies

| From what I've heard so far, there doesn't seem to be any racial motivation in his methods....so to compare him to the NF or even Hitler is a little unfair. Unless of course, they find a white hood in his glovebox

NF are just a bunch of morons, I've heard more than once that they are funded by the Govt. just to stir up bad feeling against any right wing group Far right isn't the way to go, this country needs a decent party who isn't frightened to stand up for the law abiding working class Joe be they black, white or green This PC thing has gone too far, rather than the likes of Bliar and Cameroon trying to save the world from an engineered potential catastrophy, we need someone with the guts to stand up against the wacky rule of Brussels Sprouts Regards, Bruce .

i would vote for him !! the documentary makers may not have given a balanced view of this bloke, he may have been real scum like a paedo. uneducated people still know right from wrong so this should be no excuse! perhaps he should have been pyschiatrically judged and perhaps sent to a different institution for help, hopefully people in that american state have a right to be assessed properly first. i still think this country would benefit from prisons like this. many in my family have fought in our countries war and i am proud of their memories but this country is going to the dogs and it may be too late to turn things around!!

julie i hope i read that wrong; he may have been real scum like a paedo. uneducated people still know right from wrong so this should be no excuse! perhaps he should have been pyschiatrically judged and perhaps sent to a different institution for help, hopefully people in that american state have a right to be assessed properly first. the way i read that is, you're saying people that may have learning difficulties that have done wrong, possibly serious enough for the general population to consider them scum, should be beaten/suffocated to death by people in uniform wearing a badge that states they are employed to uphold the law?? the programme was on a couple of years ago so i really cant remember how balanced it was, at first i was in agreement with his prison policies, seemed a great idea, but then it showed the other side and i changed my mind. american judicial system is different to ours which has enalbled this sheriff to become law, judge, and untouchable, which is a frightening prospect for any democratic society. i liked a lot of his prison ideas as they punish people for their crimes, however, there was a lack of rehabilitation, something that is needed, in the right balance, also, his prisons arent empty, they're full, the same as ours, and his domain definately isnt crime free............
