Saw one of these in the services near Stansted (Birchhanger) just before flying out to Munich in March.

A VERY smart looking car. I like Jags, but not really practical for day to day use, and I wouldn't like HIS fuel bill!  Cheesy

No Shaun, that's the driver (i.e. me) that you can hear squeaking and rattling Angry Grin.

I know some of the post 1998 V8 Jags had some build quality issues, Nikasil, timing chain tensioners and water pumps/thermos, also a problem with one of the ZF autoboxes as used in the normally aspirated engines, also used on Mercs and Beemers with the same failure problems (burned clutches etc). Hence the reason why I bought an inline 6 Jag, none of the above problems but still with the basic engine layout used in the E Type. Also some of the (post 2000) leather and walnut trim has minor problems with cracking but this is about all that can go wrong.

A lot of manufacturers made the move to new generation sealed components at that time and it wasn't only Jag who had problems (like the 1998 onwards autoboxes are sealed and it costs a bomb to change the fluid). I'm around a lot on the forums there and haven't heard any compaints about build quality, the XK and S doesn't suffer from a lot of the problems that the latter XJ or X Type does.

Drove an XJR-6 supercharged the other week and it was something else, for the price they go for now, I'm lusting very badly Grin.

Shaun
XK8 SHOULD NOT rattle or squeak! BUT be aware the suspension is jam packed with rubber bushes, bearings etc. which all wear and need replacing at some cost. As with all Jaguars, an extensive and comprehensive service history is worth half the price of the car........Perhaps your mate has bought a bit of a lemon Shocked
SD
Why is a jag less practical for "day to day" use than a Scorps/Cossie? NB Fuel consumption probably about on a par......Fords have never been much good in this dept.
Bruce
By coincidence, my xjs was in for servicing last week and the garage have a luvverly xjr in for sale, tho it's been around the world (175,000). I'm going back this week with the better half to see if I can persuade her.......
........in which case her 95 Cossie Ultima will be up for sale (68,000 miles, FFSH, mint)
Could anyone advise me on it's value please?
Yeh, I know you'll give me fifty quid for it............ Grin

Lovely Cars, I agree.  I actually meant the 2 door Jags.

For me 4 doors are essential. Just can't be doing with passengers having to get in first........especially when it's pigging it down with rain or when they are all dressed up and not wanting to climb in rather than just open a door and get in.

And then there's the servicing........................ Shocked

Only Jag I've had was an Inspector Morse Mk2 type. All red leather and gunmetal grey paint. Loved it, AND it had 4 doors.

There was a great satisfaction in pressing that lovely round 'start' button, and hearing that big in-line 6 cylinder engine purr into life.

I still think Jags are quality engineering, and I'd have another if it wasn't for the cost of parts and the servicing. Bit out of my pocket now.  Wink

I use my 2000 XJR every day, same MPG as I get from my 2.3 ultima. The ride can be a touch harsh due to the 40 series tyres on the 18 rims, plus the Cats suspention is harder. The XK8 should ride better as it is a touch lighter and has 245-45-18 as opposed to the 40's.
I love my Jag, the power from the supercharged V8 is awesome.

Lots of people go on about the Nikasil problem but I spoke to a main dealer and an independent specialist and he said if there was bother it would have happened by now, the problem with the sulpur deposits were cased by fuel in the 1996-97 period, 10 years ago. So may cars were recalled by Jaguar and repacement engines fitted with steel liners but with that being 8-9 years ago and cars changing hands that info could be lost. Get an independent to do a blow test, cost 30-40 quid on any car before 2000 and you should be fine.

Yes chains and tensioners can be a problem but no more than they were on my cossie and parts are cheaply available with jag specialists doing great deals on servicing, £120 for a 12000 mile service, same as it cost the wife for her VW. Tensioners and guides, full srevice and MOT for £1400, befor I bought it mind. Thats the same price people were payingfor the same on a 24v.

Pound for pound they are the bargain of the moment, S type will drop in value with the new car due in the autumn, the facelift X350 will hit pre facelift cars and the Xk8 and R will drop now the  new model is out there.

£60,000 car 5-6 years ago for under £10k, its a no brainer. 4 doors and 370hp, 0-60 in 5.2 sec.s and a true 155mph, the last bit I can vouch for.

Saying that I still cant bring myself to ever sell my Ultima.

Agree I get 29mpg in mine, even if it accidently Roll Eyes slips into sport, it still returns 24-25. And the way it goes from that muted purr to loud roar once it gets pushed over mid revs is just magic....

The R series Jags are like the holy grail, just like the V12 was back in the 70's and 80's. Ok a lot of people ran scared of the V12 but it was one helluva piece of engineering, nobody else has ever made an engine that durable or smooth and the power and roar is...awesome - even on the old 3 speed auto. Standard kit 4.0 is no slouch but add the supercharger to it and it becomes VERY quick, feels like a different car.

Look at the prices of the XJR-V8 now...you can't get a decent 5 year old Beemer for that money. And now with the S...it gets dropped next year for the XF, you can get one for barely £6k now, all because the media didn't like the retro styling...ring any bells?

Best 4 door saloon on the market is the Scorpio, the best luxury performance car is the Jag...I know what my next car is Roll Eyes.
