This is a known issue with Spybot.

SEE HERE

It's been doing this for many months now, but is just a glitch.

Just follow the advice given, if you want to fix it, but basically, there isn't really a problem. Windows security IS still working, and that is why you get the notification.

It's also recommended that if the problem persists, then uninstall (total uninstall) Spybot, and re-install the latest version.

IF you want to do this, then personally I would run a registry cleaner before you re-install. A good FREE one is EasyCleaner (Free from the toniarts web page). Beware of other, so called Free, ones which collect information. Run the programme, shut down and re-start. THEN re-install Spybot. Failsafe.

EasyCleaner IS HERE

Hope this puts your mind at rest.  Wink

Andrew..
i use norton (i know your not a fan Wink, but i have never had a probem with it really, just upgraded to the new 2007 version),it's all up to date, and running clear...
i also have windows defender installed, again all up to date and running clear....
SD
as always thanks for your advice (you didn't use to work in a PC shop did you Undecided),nice to know it looks like a "glitch" and not a threat however i think there might be an underlying problem  Undecided,i tried last night to restore the laptop back to last week when all was ok,couldn't restore it back for some reason,so went back earlier, and earlier, still no joy, cant restore the laptop back at all not to yesterday, not to 3 months ago    Cry Cry
but hey ho,looks like spybot is OK     Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
still under extended warrenty,so if it does sound serious (any advice agan  Huh),they can come and pick it up and sort it out again... Smiley Smiley
thanks again to you all.....

No buddy, but I have always built my own PC's and repaired both PC's and Laptops for friends, family, and from home for business, for a very long time now, and well, you get to be quite adept at it.  Bit like repairing Scorps!!  Grin  If you are having probs with System Restore, try this:

The first thing to do is verify the System Restore service is actually running. You can do this two ways: through the Computer Management dialog window or through a command line interface.

To access the Computer Management dialog window, go to Start and Run, and in the Open box, type comp mgmt.msc or go to Control Panel and Administrative Tools, and click Computer Management. Once you’re in the Computer Management window, expand Services and Applications in the left-hand pane and click Services. All services locally running on the system will appear in the right-hand pane. System Restore Service should have a Status of Started and a Startup Type as Automatic. If it is not running, highlight the service and right-click to open a menu that will let you Start or Restart the service, as well as access the System Restore Service Properties dialog box to verify that the service is set to automatically start.

This dialog box also offers general information about the Service name (srservice), its executable path, and Service status. Under the Log On tab, check to make certain the System Restore service is enabled for the specific hardware....

Come back if you're still stuck, although i have to say that IF this is the case, then you have almost certainly picked up a virus, and it's quite possible that a Re-install is your only way out......but this is the worst case scenario, so let's hope not.  What I WOULD do, is back up anything very important (if you haven't done so already), as a precaution.

Craig
Have you tried Ad-Aware SE personal?
It too is free and very good, seems to pick up things that both Norton AND Spybot miss.

I found that Spybot was, quite frankly, crap.
I subscribe to "Spy Sweeper" from Webroot and NEVER have any problems. I also use AVG free 7.5 Antivirus.

Nod 32 and Sygate firewall...no probs as yet Wink

The anti-virus itself isn't trouble but it reacts badly with some programs, especially games. Mate of mine used Norton and reckoned it was a pain in the RAM but I can't really comment...

Along with Spybot, I use 'SpywareBlaster' which blocks the little blighters from entering in the first place  Wink

I also use (as  Scorpius does) AVG free 7.5 antivirus, along with Zone Alarm free firewall  Smiley

Also CCleaner & Free Window Registry Repair 1.1, but will give Easy Cleaner a go as recommended by Spanners  Smiley

&......Hijack This, for detecting & removing browser hijackers  Angry

Also...I recently had trouble with system restore on XP, or lack of it, so I downloaded the following from Microsoft & it's all working again...

Windows XP & 2000.....
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C717D943-7E4B-4 622-86EB-95A22B832CAA&displaylang=en

Windows 98, Millenium & NT 4.0.....
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=0A8A18F6-249C-4 A72-BFCF-FC6AF26DC390&displaylang=en

Obviously, it only works if you have a genuine install of Windows  Wink

Hope this helps  Smiley

Hi Craig:

Sorry to hear that you're still having problems.

I only wish I was nearer, as I'd soon find what's causing it!!

Never mind. Sometimes these problems can be very difficult to sort out, even for the professionals, and I DO rate Acers (have two of their laptops) which are normally 100% good machines.

Somewhere you have a system file corruption (of whatever nature), which is wrecking the joint. Only way, unfortunately sometimes, is the complete re-install of Windows.  If you have your ACER backup info, (usually on the back page of your User's Guide), then you can do this yourself, even if you don't have the recovery CD's or Windows disc.  The Windows programme will be installed in a hidden partition on your hard disc for just such an event. If you have the Windows disc of course, then you have no problems.

If you have recovered all your data, and want to do it this way, and are unsure of how to proceed, then come back to me.

All the best  Keith.

last night i finally managed to remove the couple of viruses and a trojan from my laptop which norton claimed to have removed but had left traces in the registry which meant it still played up every now and then but nowhere near as bad as it had been.

after many hours trawling google i was directed to the site:
 http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

its a free scan and i'd recommend it to anyone, just wish i'd found it about a month ago when things started going wrong first of all  Roll Eyes you might be amazed at what that thing can pick up!

the free scan removed all the infections but compiled a report of other bits and pieces that i had to do myself or pay for the upgraded software which would do it for you. it turned out my internet explorer itself was infected so i had to re-install/download it again.

just a word of warning don't go editing the registry because i got a bit carried away deleting things and ended up not being able to open any .exe files which are what most of the ones i use are! luckily i managed to download a patch which fixed it up Smiley

cars and computers, nothing but trouble  Grin
