I had a 2.0 Capri Ghia before I bought the Granny in '97 & I loved it...soooo fast, even for a 2.0....went like s**t off a shovel  Wink

Had a 4 speed rod box in it that was fantastic...until it started playing up. The quote I had to replace the rods was astronomical (I was skint)...so picked up a 5 speed Sierra box for a song & threw that in, but it was never the same  Sad

I have only had 2 cars with the pump washer. The Mk1 Escort had one on the floor, beside the clutch pedal that you foot pumped.

And a Hillman Revenger which had a strange affair as switches go. You had (I guess you would call) 2 "arms" which came out either side of the steering column just behind the steering wheel. At the end of each arm was a round switch that you rotated - lights on one side and wipers on the other.  You had to push the wiper switch / knob / whatever for the washers - but not to operate electronically. Oh no. What you pushed is what you got. Very strange affair!!

Did you know - more accidents were caused by people exerting so much pressure on the washer pump in those days and, in doing so, losing control of the car.  Grin Honest - it's a fact. Grin Wink

It was fairly swift as I remember, even with the autobox. But, my old man never liked either of his Mk3's as much as his Mk2, I don't think he thought anything ever touched his Lotus Tina.

It really needs the back end sorting out where it got shunted, a bit of surface rust on the boot lid from where the garage has leaked. But other than that it's great..at least the Waxoyl kept the inner wings and door posts free from the worm, paint on the rest of the car is still mint, albeit covered in a decade of dirt..

Engine seems to be seized when I tried a spanner on it (last started in 1998 Lips Sealed), electrics are falling apart, but still totally stock and only 50k on the clock (37,500 when he bought it in 1990, he had the engine rebuilt at 40k). So, it'd need a total mechanical and electrical rebuild, new suspension, brakes etc Undecided

When I went to the DVLA for the records, it was one of 5 ordered in December 1982 by Mothercare of all people. Delivered 2nd Jan '83, I've got the bill of sale etc here from a dealer in Enfield. Car is Diamond white with a kind of blue Daimler colour interior. Of course, by that time the 3.0 was gone, the 2.0 was the top end Ghia. Then the Ghia was dropped a couple of months after ours was built, replaced with the Laser...

I cringe when I see some of the Capris now but this one still looks very sober Grin

One of those things, I'm forever weighing it up in my mind..on one hand I'm into the Jags now as project cars and if I could get another it'd be another Jag, on the other hand it's got a lot of history to it and seems to be quite unique, wouldn't want to see it go to scrap or become a banger racer or something if I let it go..

Ahhh... Undecided

EDIT: Straying quite far from your topic now Embarassed

The speakers in the Granny look great, what about courtesy and footwell lamps etc... Grin

Have you got an interior shot of the dash etc?

I had a Morris Oxford MO that had a thing you squeezed to wash the windscreen.

It was called a washing up liquid bottle... ROFL

I also wish I had a tenner for every after market heater I have fitted on the old upright Ford Pops. They were driven by a wheel that ran off the back of the fan belt.

That was what you CALLED high tech!

That does look the bis, Jonny. They are smashing looking cars - the interior in yours looks excellent.

It's such a shame that nice ones are hard to come by. The V6 Essex in them sounds great and they are a perfectly liveable car today.

You can almost imagine 1975 all over again with Carter and Regan sliding the car all over the place. I don't suppose, Jonny, you ever treat it to a bit of "Sweeney" style driving, do you ? To see one of them come sliding round a corner at high speed would be a spectacle.

Bruce....It's a recent restoration job (this year), but it's an original 30 year old+ interior.

My old interior was looking a bit shabby....sun damaged back seat (dried out & torn all the way across the top), ripped drivers seat, sun damaged dash (cracked vinyl), carpet had oil in it that wouldn't come out, the rear parcel shelf was sun damaged with speaker holes in it the size of dustbin lids  Roll Eyes....the whole interior also had a damp musty smell because of various water leaks over the years.

Since I bought the car in 1997, I'd been wanting to sort out the interior but never got around to it...time/money etc.

But last October I spotted a beige velour interior, identical to mine (what's the chances ?) on Ebay. The guy was in Chelmsford (only 15 miles away), so went to have a look at it first. I couldn't believe it...it had been dry stored in a lock-up for a few years & apart from being a bit grubby, it looked almost immaculate...no rips, nasty stains, smells etc...just a couple of bits of seat piping that looked a little worn...none the less, a hundred times better than mine was.

Anyway in the end I was the only bidder & got it for £80 (starting price)...seats, carpet, dash, door cards, parcel shelf, everything really apart from the gear stick console....so a bit of a bargain I reckon  Wink....I'd be kicking myself now if I hadn't got it  Smiley

Cleaned it all up nicely with my Bissel & stuck it all in....& there you have it  Grin

Oh.... & the steering wheel is new as well. It's from a MK1 3.0S....looks & feels much better than the standard steering wheel, which was bigger with a thinner hand grip (finger nail marks in my palms are now a thing of the past)......A steal at just £25 off Ebay  Wink

It is parked outside (don't have a garage) all year round...but I've got a good breathable cover, so that keeps the elements at bay & have one of those moisture traps in the car as well. But it's still taking it's toll as parts of the paintwork are starting to bubble up in places & the Rear N/S wheel arch needs a bit of attention.
It would be nice to garage/store it somewhere over the winter months, but I've yet to find anywhere nearby  Sad

DasRSK...I'm not sure whereabouts you are in the country. But if you're in South Essex, then name a street that you know & I'll gladly come & 'Sweeney' it around the corner for you  Wink  Grin

Sorry if I've babbled on a bit, but I do like to talk about my Granny....does it notice ?  Grin

Does it notice? Never Grin

Got a breathable cover on the Jag, no room in the garage, filled with floorboards and joists still...it doesn't even go out in the rain, at least the cover keeps the rain and bird crap off.

Some bubbles on the rear pass. side arch which need sorting, but that's all...apparently they left the panel sealer off in 1995, that year is known for rusty rear arches Roll Eyes

Honest, after the way the Capri has survived, I'm big on Waxoyl...it's been in a damp garage since November 1996 and on the whole it's still nearly mint, no rust on the arches or sills, just some surface stuff on the bottom edge of the bootlid where the outside wall lets water in. It was restored in June '95 to better than new condition, but it's still lasted well...apart from the damage on the rear, clean the decade of dirt off and it'd still look better than some 5 year old cars.

Maybe one of these days it'll live again, I've still got a soft spot for it Smiley

The Granny looks great Wink

Any pics of the Carpi Bruce ?

P.S.....Wax oil is great....brushed about 3mm thick of the stuff on the underneath of the Granny about 6 years ago & it's not rotted at all......maybe a good idea to smother the paintwork in vaseline next winter ?.... Grin

I've got some from when it was restored and some after it was shunted which were from the insurance claim, I'll see if I can find a couple of decent ones and scan them in Smiley

It's in a bit of a sorry state at the moment, tyres have rotted and it's sitting on those castor dolly things so I can move it around...but it's only mechanics, the car is there overall and complete too. I was looking on eBay and parts seem really cheap now, I want to keep it stock visually but it badly needs new (better) brakes etc, still thinking about junking the Pinto engine for something beefier but it is a simple engine and I'm no experienced mechanic to the level of implanting engines, don't have the tools either Undecided. Interior is still good, just needs a good clean...the seats will need refoaming but not a big deal. Biggest problem at the mo is that the car's garaged back in London and I can't get there often enough to work on it, it'll need work (slave wheels, brakes etc) just to get it fit to be trailered up here.

How much are you selling the Granny for? Grin

He he - just my luck. I live just north of Braintree.

Seriously though - they are a stunner and it's no wonder you talk a lot about it - they are just so rare today. A mate of mine had a coupe ghia on an N plate. He had this car about 15-17 years ago and the Essex meet of the Granada owners club was at the Spread Eagle pub in Margaretting, Essex. We all used to go along - even back then, nice Mk1s were getting thin. Like most Fords, unfortunately, they were treated so unhealthily in the young fleet / company car years, so many became ratbags.

What's with the double Ford badge then, Jonny ? I don't ever remember Ford badging their cars quite like that ?  Grin With the size of those, compared to the oval today, definitely tells you the make quite clearly. And I guess the boot has 2 badges as well ? Grin

Strange - from a 1st glance at that picture, there is a striking resemblance to the Opel Commodore of the same era. Whoops...might have offended...I'll get my hat and go.

I put the double Ford badge on there 'cos I thought it kinda makes it all look symetrical, but now I'm not to sure that it looks all that great  Undecided

One of the Ford badges is coming off soon though, 'cos I've just found a nice chrome 'Granada' lettering badge in my big box of odds & sods.... Smiley.....just so everyone knows that it isn't an Opel Commadore  Wink
