sometime monday night /tuesday morning some one tried to break into my old scorpio. They smashed the lock and the latch but could not get the door open ,only get it on the first lock .Apart from costing me money and time I cant see why they picked on my car .as cars go its not worth anything and the ford cd player is not exactly worth a fortune either .I just cant see why anyone would bother .also I cant understand why the alarm did not go of ?

Do you have ultrasonic sensors on the door pillars between the front and rear doors? I think they were optional and they sense shock/vibration. Apart from that I think the alarm would have gone off if it sensed a voltage i.e. if the thief had triggered the central locking, managed to turn the ignition on, opened a door and put the interior lights on etc.

I can't personally recommend one, but choose carefully. I had an aftermarket alarm and it didn't play particularly nicely with the standard alarm and PATS system!

...because the Scorpio is a nice expensive, quiet looking car (no bias) and the average hoodlum isn't quite sure of what to make of it which probably makes it attractive to them. It's not about the radio, it's about having a smart looking car to thrash around the streets to get home from the pub/club. Had mine done twice the other year, worse part about it is that I know who did it. First time the trim on the drivers side window was ripped off and the mirror smashed, second time the mirror pulled off, scratch planted down the drivers side, tyres partly let down for some obscure reason. IMO, the original alarm setup is enough, especially if you deadlock it. The ultrasonic sensors are a good idea if you can retro-fit them. I feel for you mate but you aren't the first

There are many kits available and are fairly easy to fit. However, the one I fitted to my old Audi 80 was so ultra sensitive that even a fly left in the car would set it off, if you forgot to close a window it would remind you 30 seconds later when the alarm went off, most embarassing in the local Tecos car park. I found it so annoying, I disconnected it. But then I don't live in a high car crime area.

to prevent vehicule theft try a steering wheel lock. sometimes folk just 'bust in' to check the glove box ! I leave my box and ashtrey open if parking anywhere dodgy ! I would love to catch someone breaking in to my motor. or one of the ones in the past I have lost. sorry to hear abouy it. my mate had his car kicked and badly dented the day after he polished it parking near a pub. Honda prelude, nice car !

The ultrasonic sensors should be fine if they are original spec, I've got them in the XJ, didn't even notice them until I had some stuff on the back seat one day and it fell over... But as for causing any trouble, they don't, you shouldn't even notice them there. I believe they should also trigger if someone breaks a window, mine are set into the roof lining, pointing at the side windows...Scorpio should be the same. The PATS should stop the average yob getting far, the problems is that the damage is often done the moment they break in...just mindless vandalism
