advice on new car?

i have finally been awarded my full mobility allowance!!! what a battle!!! am keeping my 2.3 ultima estate, still only done 74,000 and is my little baby! have been looking at the mobility car list and the only promising one is a mazda 6ts2, any thoughts? i have also seen a scorpio 24v which i fancy, apparently only done 60k and going for £1995, hubby is against this one due to petrol consumption but how bad is it? i fancy giving this one a go. anything to look out for especially? obviously i will barter the price down- what should it be going for in a sound state? any advice would be very welcome!!! Kiss

depends how and where you drive but expect 20-25mpg with the 24v and to pay around the £1200 mark for a really nice one.. is this one from a dealer at that price?

If you decide to get it you should consider a gas conversion, this will half the cost of fuel to star with, talk to thunderchild about figures, he has the same...

I'd buy one converted. if you have a means to get the fuel somewhere close to you. The thought of driving 20-30 miles to fill up defeats the object ! 24v's are great.  Grin

There are more and more gas stations comming on line nowadays and I have never had a problem filling up, I recently found a garage up in the Welsh mountains much to my surprise selling gas, and the price was good too - 42p per litre.  No, I dont think availability is an issue at all.

Yep, every half decent size petrol station seems to have it now as well as a lot of the small ones

thanks for the advice lads! better consumption that i thought! it is on sale from a dealer but thats no problem i was thinking maybe around the £12-1400 price range. i think i'll push with highlanders £1200, thats if its in as good a condition as they say!does look lovely though. will give it a checkover on the forecourt before they turn up in the morning- don't want to show that i'm too eager!! i will look into the possibility of a gas con. we have a local gas place in penwith about 10 miles from me, proberbly some closer i'll check it out. can anyone advice if there is anything to look out for in particular to this model that i would'nt come across with my 2.3ult? once again all, many thanks for your advice Kiss

How long have you got Wink

listen for the timing chain rattle on start up if the engine is cold. possibly just for a second or two.
replacement or repairing a broken one will set you back the same as what you pay for the car  Shocked

Give the car a good test run and make sure all the electrics and the autobox work fine.

You should be covered buying from a dealer but its better not to get a bad one to begin with Wink

Be wary if the engine is warmed up for you when you get there, a lot of noises (like timing chain rattle) only shows up on a cold car, check the transmission fluid color and smell (burnt smell and small black pieces are obviously not good  Wink), battery cover is a classic, if the new cossie is an estate, the rear dampeners would be nice to check (not sure how to do that without a garage though) they are expensive to replace on the estate, check the operation of *all* the electrics including both front seats, check the air con/climate control,

can't think of anything else at the moment, but I'm sure there is more  Smiley

Indeed, like Kjetil says,     always insist on observing a cold start-up.

Check for trueness of steering, does it keep going in a straight line
when you take your hands off the wheel ?
