Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware)

Now people I would like to ask some advice while getting some stuff of my chest. I recenlty bought this on fleebay.

If you cant see it its a Scorpio Estate 2.3 Ghia X 1997 with 117k on the clock, lovely and clean inside and out... lovely. The nice man said this on the listing "full service history, excellent condition , free delivery 50 miles, buy it now, you don find many like this" I thought not war and peace however phone calls with the seller gave me a warmer happier feeling inside. I went and picked the vehicle up and was collected from the station by Mr Churchill and taken to his home in the vehicle. All was well no problems. We did the necessary paperwork and I left Mr Churchill to drive home, on the way a light came on, I pulled into the garage and had a look at the book, the indication was low coolant, I looked at the service history and thought that it had been a wee while since the last service so perhaps this needed topping up so I bought some water and did this. Sadly the next day the light reappeared.
I telephoned Mr Churchill and explained the problem, to say he was not interested would be rather short of the mark, he basically told me what did I expect for the money and what did I want him to do.
Subsequent investigations have shown that the inlet manifold for the vehicle was broken...............ooppsss. £222+ vat for the part and labour to fit it.
Big oops eh, my query is that what rights do I really have, this guy has traded a number of cars through ebay and whilst his feedback has been resonable to date I got a bit of a duffer. Perhaps I should wind my neck in a wee bit after al the motor only cost me £750 and the repair will bring it to about £1100 quid and it is still a heck of a lot of motor for the price. I just feel I have been a wee bit shafted and wondered if any of you had taken action against such a sale in the past.

firstly i would say £750 for a scorp that doesnt have leather is very much upper limit, and he states the wheels are alloy, i could be wrong but they look like plastic trims which is a breach of description.
it doesnt matter if you paid £750, £7,500, or £7.50, unless there is a prior agreement between buyer and seller i.e. faults are listed clearly and you understand, then surely 'goods have to be fit for the purpose that they are intended', i.e. usable, driveable.
going on what he sounds like, it might be worth having the rest of the car checked.

if the guy is a trader then you are entitled to have your money back no questions asked for up to one month after purchase,
if the car has over heated in the past due to the cracked manifold, dont be surprised if the head has cracked, the 2.3 seems to be prone to it ones its over headed, and the 2.3 engine and bits are rare to come by,
give trading standards a ring, and also get ebay to contact him

Thanks gents. I have been on to trading standards now to try and resolve, they have given some advice about seeking three quotes for the repair, (even though its in being fixed now) then sending him a registed letter saying what i exoect, when I expect it by etc etc. I will goi down the route, he sells motors but is a from home type of trader so no garage or forcourt to picket lol.
Thankfully the rest of the caar seems to work fine, my mechanic mate put it through an MOT prior to ordering the inlet manifold just incase it was good money after bad.

i think the limit on selling cars privately is a maximum of 10 per year, more than that and you are classed as a trader and have to pay tax.........just a thought

If you look through his feedback, he appears to have sold more than 10 cars in the past year, so he can't possibly class himself as a private seller
Also, does the manifold look as though it's been patched up in anyway or is there copious amounts of stop leak in the coolant. This may indicate that he knew the problem existed & has attempted a quick fix
