road tax               does the rise in the budget for higher polluting cars apply to our cars or is it just for new cars?

The details are all HERE. 'Our' cars don't rely on the CO2  grading system.

My understanding is that the VED bandings apply only to cars first registered after March 2001.
Seriously considering a pre 1973 vehicle when the time comes to replace the Scorpio...with as large an engine as I can get.

I think some but not all car manufacturers published CO2 figures earlier than 2001 but that is when the EU directive came in to force.
The SMMT site http://www.smmtco2.co.uk/co2search2.asp should be of use if you really want to know but I think ALL of the Scorpio range would now fall into the highest band  Undecided

I know what you mean, I rather fancied an early XJ6, a Jensen Interceptor, or a Rover P5B coupe. I do buy classic car magazines but this rather kills the dream as good examples of any fanciable classic car such as these are MUCHOS cash, compared to our cheap as chips Scorps.

And do you really want to find bits for your 30 year old blower motor, or a new 17 piece window seal (seriously for a door on a P5B). It'd make find Scorp bits like taking candy from a baby.

And the drive in todays traffic, where any accident will write it off and youre dealing with ancient mechanicals.

I wouldn't anymore ... and I used to run a 7.5T armoured Humber Pig APC in full Northern Ireland spec as a toy (that was a giggle Grin)

As far as I know, Scorpios are not affected by the tax banding as they were registered before 2001.....

Hi Tib

it's me again.... Wink I totally agree with you.... alas the countries you mention are now in the same position as this and other "developed" counties were during the "industrial revolution" These peole have been held back from so called industrial and cultural development because of the lack of resorces in the past. The modern day "achievements" now allow them to "come on" in leaps and bounds.  I imagine it to be like a greyhound out of the trap, all its focus is on getting the hare, with no thought for anything else on the way.  it goes on and it always will, the human race is VERY greedy.  Angry

Agreed.

if we want to make a REAL difference tho, we need to forget these pathetic ideas about pollution taxation in the developed world and to hand the developing world a few shortcuts....

Do you think that the chinese would bother using a coal fired power station or fume belching, water pollutiing industries if we provided them with the latest nuclear power station technology gratis ? or perhaps helped them the develop hydro / wind/ geothermal energy ?

if we want to make a true impact on climate change, we need to prevent the developing nations from making the pollution mistakes we made for a second time by helping them to jump the curve.

Well its definitely purely taxation and got nothing to do green issues. Quite simply if the goverment wanted to be treated seriously, they would ban the sale of the most polluting cars which are mostly company purchased. Quite simply fuel and road tax is a cashcow to the govt.

Also the vast majority of air travel is leisure, and not essential. Gets my blood boiling at how little duty their fuel is at and they do create many thousands of tons of pollution.

Not sure, but China is a nuclear power isnt it? Either way I wouldnt feel to sorry for a country that WILL rule the word one day and has a rocketing economy, they also have large military forces, scientists and high tecjnology etc and a perfectly able to develop whatever they want.

If the developed world cannot agree how to handle climate change, there is not a chance in hell for the developing world. Its fightening the level of deforestation in the the rain forests let alone anywhere else. Every nation is out for itself. Every developing nation wants the best that the developed world has, but that also means they'll get the worst of it too.

Lets face it we need cheap, sustainable, non-polluting power and there isnt one!

I cannot see how we can get around this.

Jensens are easy to work on. Mate of mine has a '73 convertible and I've had to do everything to that in order to make it reliable. Easy when you know how....

I agree.Everything is readily accesable with room to spare. It,s just that nearly every jenson i have seen has had appauling wiring & this one is no exception.Spent the best part of 4 hours last night lifting out the engine to be sent off to a specialist to be overhauled. Now i can get into the engine bay loom & tidy everything up,Going to fit a lumenition system to hopefully make the ignition more reliable & then i can get started on the lighting looms  Cry Cry.I will say though the ferrari was far more easier to work on.Even the italian wiring was of better quality.Oh well i guess this will be another summer working on the father in laws motors & not my own  Sad

It was a 1970's British car. Bad wiring was a cost option Wink

As the jokes go, Lucas were the inventors of darkness, the magicians of blown fuses...during the BL days, the wiring on new Jags and Triumphs was said to be so bad that they wouldn't start by the time they'd been shipped accross the pond because all the current leakage from the bad connections would drain the batteries.

I think an Interceptor or Scimitar GTE was my dad's dream car, the closest he ever got was a Capri...

And that needs a rewire, if you want to see bad wiring you need look no further Wink
