AAAAAAAARRRRRRGH!!!!! Why oh why did I sell my scorp? Oh yes I remember broken gear box, well just had to fork out £3500 for a gearbox for the new car. thats not a typing error it was three and a half grand and I sold my scorp because the gearbox was likely to cost a couple of hundred quid. cant help thinking what I have spent on this car I could of had around eight or nine good scorps. Go on bring it on call me a fool etc I know I should have listened when I was told to mothball the scorp (think it was bruce who told me not to sell)

A contribution, thats a laugh, I asked for a final price before the job was started which was £3496.00 after five weeks i got the call saying the car was ready they tried to add vat to that and told me the car had failed its mot on the hazard warning switch being inoperative. I had never mentioned an mot so, I point blank refused to pay for that. obviously I did not pay the extra vat either because a final price is exactly that and no more. I have been in touch with peugeot uk about this who were very sympathetic but not much help and they did forward my complaint to the director of "RICHARD HARDY" Chester-le -Street for his attention. You have all heard the story before, its highly unlikely you get any satisfaction from any complaint. However when they tried to add vat to the final price I was very firm in refusing to pay it and kept on being as firm. When I turned up to collect the car with £3500 in cash the service manager did have a bit of a stammer and his hands were realy shaking when I dropped the money on the counter and said count that!

Al, a mate of mine had a French only imported Pug 406 or something, V6 engine and lots of toys. But that one needed a clutch and a set of (I think metric?) tyres, it was going to cost £3k so he cut his losses It's the same thing with the Jags, I'd love to get a 2001 or 2002 XJR when I eventually part with the Sport, I've driven a couple and they are awesome cars, warp-like acceleration, 390 horses in the later ones and 0-60 of 5.4 seconds, that amount of power flat out is simply...awesome. But the autobox in the R is made by Mercedes, same as fitted to the AMG Mercs. And that autobox is junk, the MB forums are filled with people who've bought AMGs and some that have failed after a few hundred miles. And that can cost a bit more than £3k to repair, so you're not alone mate You know, I had the 'box on the Scorp reconditioned by Ford, and that cost me £1500. Sure, with hindsight I was had and I never got it sorted properly, but £1500 is smallfry compared to what they conned you for.. It's a shame because I saw the thread from when you bought it and it looks such a bloody nice car

When I've been looking for cars in the past I have always compiled a list of a few cars I might like to own and then done some homework and found out the replacement cost of the 2 major mechanical items - namely the engine and gearbox - and either put a tick or a cross against the particular vehicle, depending on wether it would would be the kind of amount I would be prepared to pay to get the car fixed or not. Cars that get ticked are investigated further for cost of a new exhaust and other common parts and then eliminated or otherwise using the same criteria. I guess that is pretty much why I always seem to end up with a Ford

| Hey Buddy I really do feel for you, I have always been wery of the French auto industry, I think (my thoughts) the french have something against us when it comes to supplying goods and shackles The only french car I ever fancied owning was back in the 70's when we had a Citroen in our workshop for repair, the engine was originally designed for an aeroplane and it had the active suspention which I believe they have stuck with, also the 2cv for the fun of driving it..... apart from that I have always thought of them to be overpriced, under par (and over here) And they certainly know how to charge for parts.... Still, so long as the problem with yours is now sorted and nothing else goes wrong, you should have a decent enough car and as time goes the money will pail into insignificance, I have certainley been in the same position not long ago with what I have ended up spending on my Scorp (£6000+) but maybe that was my misjudgement, still it's going ok for now so I'm happy. I hear what your saying Pete and I do agree. I would normally have run a mile from anything french but I fell in love with the 607's. I was actualy looking at a volvo s80 T6 when I first spotted the 607 and I did end up travelling a good distance to get what I thought was a good one. Dont get me wrong I still realy like the car and in my opinion is a worthy replacement for the scorp especialy now that I have paid for a warrenty (another £300) Jonny, I wouldn't remove it from your list just yet mate there is a MANUAL diesel version

i've had a couple of pugs and found them to be excellent, before i had the scorp i owned a 1990 205 diesel, when i bought it i had the belt changed as they're due at 72,000 and the car had done 100,000, my mechanic said he'd never seen a timing belt in such bad condition with the engine still working . that cost £150 and was the only major work that the car needed in a few years of me owning it, the car ran perfectly, was like mechano to do usual servicing bits, spares were cheap etc but it was so basic and not very comfortable which is why i went for the scorp as i was suffering lower back problems. to be fair to scorps they are a totally different animal and so much more refined etc but i really do wonder why i changed now. i think there are so many car sites on the net now that if you're thinking of changing just visit the owners clubs to get an idea, i would suspect that if many of us on here had done that and seen the constant barrage on the problem and advice pages we wouldnt have touched scorpios with a barge pole.......

Its of no help to you now, but I dont think its just Peugeot. I think its quite simply modern cars. They are a major conflict of high tech (for the sales brochure), and lowest possible build cost (for the accountant). For every new feature , or touchy feely dash etc added that you can see, you can safely bet that something you cant see (and maybe some you can) has been made cheaper. Mercedes fell into this trap in the 90's, which is why you see so many rusty mercs in this era and have only just got there act together. I had a 1995 S500 Limo , excellent car, but started getting rusty, and the boot lid clanged..... clanged I ask you !!!!!! Replaced it with an 1988 BMW 750il, built like a bank vault, and just as reliable and rust free. Now conside that the BMW was a 50k car in 1988 and the S500 was a 50K car in 1995, with inflation how can this be!!? Drastic cost cutting measures. This must affect all car manufactures chasing market share, instead of profitability. I suppose its not really the car companies fault, we all want lots of kit, for as little as possible, so I suppose they are just responding to the market.

chrali, thats a good point well made, and as far as the mercs are concerned if you listen to clarkson there is still a build quality issue. Got to admit I did often slated my wifes previous car (a peugeot 206 1.9 diesel) but to be fair as a general run around it was good only issue it ever had was a snapped alternator belt. However it was not comfy and the seat did not go back far enough to accomadate my 'average' size on the issue of my 607 I have been doing some digging with the previous warranty company and it turns out that they paid for a replacement gearbox for this car in 2005. it had 65k on the clock then its now got 83k so a gearbox has lasted less than 20k I am currently talking to peugeot uk about this, never mind the three years its the mileage issue that gets me. Methinks a gearbox should last more than 18k miles On the topic of mega-expensive replacement gearboxes, a guy at work had to have a new automatic gearbox on his Audi A8 - cost £4.5k - and that was 3 or 4 years ago. Ouch !

Not well Dave, Basicaly I am banging my head against a brick wall. However, I have now gone to pester mode with at least two phone calls a weak. Hopeing they will take some action just to get rid of me. I havn't suggested it and I don't want to set my sights low but at this stage a free 12month warranty on the car would suffice.
