why dont they sit... Huh

all other breeds do including whippets & iggys, but not greyhounds......they're beautiful serene gentle dogs that'll stand patiently or lie down, but never sitHuhHuh

Maybe it's because no-one has ever taught them to sit......they're just trained to race  Smiley

I seem to remember the greyhound in Steptoe & Son used to sit down  Wink

It's in the breeding, the back leg bones and muscle structure is designed for running at speed and therefore make it difficult to sit.... Shame init... Cry

They are painted different colours so you can see which one wins, the coloured coats are to nobble the bookies.... Grin

Greyhounds are one of the oldest breeds of dogs, and appear in art and literature throughout history. In ancient Egypt, Greyhounds were mummified and buried along with their owners, and tombs were often decorated with Greyhound figures.

Alexander the Great had a Greyhound named Peritas.

The Greyhound is mentioned in the Old Testament (Proverbs 30:29-31), Homer (Odyssey, where the only one to recognize Odysseus upon his return was his Greyhound, Argus), Chaucer (The Canterbury Tales), and Shakespeare (Henry V and Merry Wives of Windsor). Greek and Roman gods and goddesses were often portrayed with Greyhounds.

There are many differing explanations for the origin of the term Greyhound. One writer suggests that the original Greyhound stock was mostly grey in color. Another says the term derives from the Old English "grei," meaning "dog," and "hundr," meaning "hunter." Another explanation is that it is derived from "gre" or "gradus," meaning "first rank among dogs." Finally, it has been suggested that the term derives from Greekhound, since the hound reached England through the Greeks.

Greyhounds have long been associated with royalty. In fact, from the 11th to the 14th century, English law decreed that no "mean person" was allowed to keep a Greyhound. Penalty for breaking this law was death!

The above was copied from a greyhound website & not my ramblings  Wink

the greyhounds mentioned in ancient egypt etc are likely to have been 'iggys', smallest of the sight hounds (italian greyhounds, so named as they were popular with roman soldiers who brought them back from the east) which are typically no taller than 15 inches, a lot of iggys in paintings etc have been mistaken for greyhound puppies. as jonny says gentry owned 'hounds' and peasants had dogs.

heres some iggy's, traditional brindle markings are not accepted in iggys and any such marking is considered a flaw....

Talking of dogs,  I'm glad to see the Car manufacturer     ( can't remember which one,  which  kinda  negates their   advertising  stratagem   )    has  withdrawn that  unpleasant   TV ad   featuring   the  shivering   dog.

Just   what   the  hell   have singing  dogs got  to  do  with  new  cars ?

Ad  agencies,   they've  really  hit  rock bottom now.

I think it was trying to get over the point of being able to sing out loudly in the car (freedom) whereas you can't really in public, it was supposed to be under stress while waiting to get back into the car....  Huh That's how I saw it anyway.   Undecided Why they think a dog would want to sing in the car I don't know....  Sad I won't miss the add, won't buy the car either.... Not sure why the dog is shivering, but my black Lab does exactly the same when I take her to the vet for her yearly booster & checkover. She gets even more shakey when the vet gets the thermometer out  Shocked.... Wink

Hi Jc, we had a black lab, had her for 15 years unfortunately her back undercarriage went, gradually got worse until one night I came home from work and as I opened the back gate she literally dragged her back end along the path to greet me, she was shivering then. She shivered when she was excited ie while waiting for us to open a pack of chewsticks or a can of meat... bless her... Called her Bess....

On that evening we decided to take her to the vet who said it would be kinder if we let her go to sleep.... Cry I'll never forget that night... as the vet was on her own and Bess was a big dog we had to hold her while the vet administered the injection.... Cry I felt the life go out of that dog, our freind...  Cry from that day we vowed that we would never own another pet...... Undecided

They have deep feelings do dogs, that's why they are so loyal, even in her plight to get to me as I arrived home I saw the joy and excitement in her face, she must have really been suffering, poor dog...

Anyway, I'm off to dry my eyes.... all that was about 14 years ago and we still miss her, we have many grand (and not so grand) memories of our Bess.... you enjoy yours bud. Wink

I'll never forget that night...

I think a lot of us have been there at some point. If you're not a dog person it's hard to relate to what it's like to lose a member of the family and your best mate.

We lost our collie Fudge on Father's day 06. Day started brilliant., wife & son spoilt me with breakfast in bed plus pressies... bliss. In the afternoon Fudge's back legs went and that was it... gone.  Cry
My world caved in and I doubt Father's day will ever be the same again.

We resolved "Never again!"... But the house wasn't the same without a dog so we decided to dip our toes in the water once more. Now we can't imagine life without our new family member.   Smiley
We'll never forget Fudge, or any of the dogs we've had and lost over the years. We've always had dogs, I guess we always will...

What a pity.   Never could understand that mindset.

One goes..... you get another, that's  life.

Surely the few days of  heartbreak when  losing a pet  is   offset   by  the previous 15 years  of  companionship  from   that  devoted  friend.

And so long as there is someone there during the day to look after them, our next door neighbour goes out every day, the dog BARKS all day...... they aren't even bovvered (Catherine Tate  Grin )

Another reason we haven't replaced Bess...
