Just wondering - purely out of idle curiosity, what was the list price of new Scorpios during the time they were sold and the prices of the factory options ?
Does anyone have old price lists etc...?

Mike. Have a look at THIS page and the links on the left. The press cutting one has a fair bit of detail and prices the Ultima at £27,000 plus.  .

The paperwork in my '96 Ultima said £23,250 IIRC, no leather but pass airbag and some other goodies which escape me now..
Estate was a few coppers more

£28k will buy you a reasonably good Lotus Cortina from 40 years or so ago.... wouldn't pay that either!
I paid £5,500.00 for my first Scorpio. 1998 S reg Nouveau Red metallic. it was a mere 4 years old then!

It may have been expensive, but how much would a comparable car of a different make have been? I can guarantee that anything German would have cost a fair bit more!

unfortunately ford were just punching above their weight, yes it had a hell of a lot more toys than a comparable priced german car, but thats imaterial really, a new car can have as many toys as you want, but if reliability of the car and the toys is in question......then add the fact that ford had no real back for this super luxury car; half the mechanics didnt know what it was let alone how to work on it, then unfortunately the result is exactly what happened.
dont get me wrong i cant stand bmw, dont mind mercs so much but they are all very expensive for what you get, however when the scorpio was released and 100,000+ bought it (did they really sell that many) with all its toys, then they sell it on 5 years or so later how much did they get? whereas mr bmw buyer pays the same for a pretty basic model (he might be lucky and get leccy windows thrown in) and then sells that on after 5 years........its not difficult to work out....

You would have to assume that the majority of Scorpios that were sold, were sold to companies or organisations for management,VIP & official use etc.
So the rapid depreciation wouldn't really have mattered too much, as the original cost would be classed as a business expense & therefore it would have been tax deductable

well at least thats good news for most individuals jonny, but the result for ford was the same, and i spose someone somewhere foots the depreciation bill....probably all of us a tax payers...

Also, cars (like electrical goods and computers) have got cheaper in relation to most other stuff, you get more for your money for the average Focus/Fiesta/Mondeo now compared to 10 years ago...
I don't get the Beemer buyers though...Ok, they're solid enough cars, they drive the right end which is a big advantage over the Mondeo, they're nowhere near as front end heavy either. But I went with a mate car hunting a while back, he was looking at a 318i. Real poverty spec car, no power, everything about it shouted base model. £8995 for a 4y/o base spec Beemer? Come on, where's the sense in that - does a badge really mean that much? 
Our Mondeo cost £12,500 new (ex-dem) in 1996, list price was a tad over 14k...that for a mundane 1.8 petrol with 5 spd box, cloth trim and wheeltrims, only things it has over a bog standard LX are electric windows/mirrors and metallic paint. Ok, it's been a great car even if it dies tomorrow. But £12k for a car that's worth barely £300 now? That's a big hit, even over 12 years, it lost half its value in the first 3...

You're right there - 12k is a lot to drop even after 12 yrs.
Chap at work bought himself a new BMW 3 yrs ago, cost him £35k or as near as makes no difference - traded it in this year for a new one and got around £15k in px. True he's on a bit more than me but...that's crazy !
My dad always used to buy a new car every 3 yrs - up until the early 70's when incomes didn't rise as fast a car prices - last new car he bought was a Sunbeam Rapier in 1973 which he kept for 6 yrs before giving it to me ( blown head gasket, yeah, thanks dad ! ) and from then on he always bought used.
Afraid I'm a bit of a tight-wad these days when it comes to cars - I work on max depreciation of £500 per year ( not including repairs ), so a 3 grand car would have to last me 6 yrs.
Most I've ever paid for a car was just under 6k...and that was my Porsche 924.

I've got two Range Rovers.
List price on the older one was £29k in '87, and it then had £15k spent on it. The newer one cost £53k in '95.
Happily, they're now affordable for anyone who's willing to do a bit of work themselves.
Depreciation, it's great if you buy at the bottom of the curve, pretty awful anywhere else...
