Car Tax

Does anyone know/remember the new road tax tarrifs and when they come into force?

I'm after a estate type car to carry my dogs (I daren't put one in the back of the Scorpio!) and a Ford Explorer is available at a decent price., has all the whistles & bells BUT it's a 4 litre.
It was registered Sept 2000.

I recall something about cars registered before 2000 being exempt (Huh)
How much would a 2000 4 litre cost to tax?
Probably why it's a good price!   Roll Eyes

Any input would be appreciated.
Cheers, Wayne.

Well road tax seems to go up most years, but only by about five or ten quid - I've not heard of any plans to increase it massively, but then, it wouldn't suprise me if this govt. decided to do that...

As far as I know, road tax on older vehicles (before 2001) will only go up by a nominal amount every year because the V5 doesn't state what the CO2 emissions are......so they can't be taxed as a high polluting vehicle  Smiley

Anyway, I'm not too worried, because I know, like so many others, that by this time next year, Gordon Brown will not be the Prime Minister & Labour will not be in power  Wink

I think Labour  is reconsidering its very unfair retrospective  tax  hike on  gas guzzling  older cars  first registered  between 2001 - 2008.

I  hopefully expect  to  pay  ( as I have been up to now )  the  £210  Tax rate  for my  2002 American  car rather than the stonking  £455   mooted  to start in 2010.

I don't think the govt. like us taking holidays: they've increased and added taxes on cheap flights, and upped taxes on cars capable of towing a caravan.  So unless you stay in a hotel, you're stuffed.

Of course, I don't imagine the chancellor taking caravan holidays or budget flights to Belfast, so why should he care?!

P.S.

I'm buying an el-cheapo chinese motorbike soon; the low purchase price, road tax and fuel consumption is my way of sticking two fingers up at the govt.  If they keep putting the costs up it'll work out better value to not bother doing things legally - the fines (if you get caught) would probably still work out cheaper, especially if you got away with it for a while...
