just come back from a week,s break in cheshire(warner hotel,,,never again wot a mistake, but that,s another story)we left cheshire oaks shopping precinct back of lunch on friday to travel along the M56 and catch the M6 north back up to cumbria.
the weather was absolutely appalling, torrential downpour all the way, wipers on speed two all the time .the visibility was that bad and the surface conditions were that bad that the traffic was only doing 40 mph with all three lanes full because of the amount of spray.
me thinking i was being sensible was keeping a 50yds distance to the car in front to give me a chance if any thing was to happen.
i was tailgated by a monster truck not less than two yds from my back bumper all the way along the M56 in these appalling conditions. what his intentions were i don,t know as all three lanes were full to capacity. it was quite scary to think what could have happened.
what also amazed me ,was the amount of cars running with no lights on whatsoever in the very gloomy visibility.
it really is quite tiring driving in these conditions as the concentration levels are huge compared to normal and as soon as we could we pulled off at tebay services for a cuppa but it ,s not the trip you want every week

Maybe the "professional" doesn't drive a car ! Huh.The view from a lorry cab in heavy spray conditions which THEY are causing is much better than in a car. When spray suppression on HGVs was first introduced, tippers and tankers were exempt owing to the types of body !.These types seem to make up 50% of all heavies, not that suppression equipment is over effective anyway, since the massive turbulence created whips water of the road and sprays it far and wide. The everyday position of the modern lorry pilot,ie hours regulations, therefore needing to make every minute count, and the scandalous price of fuel at 6 mpg, makes the need for logistic efficiency paramount.Their view is that motorists getting in the way are endangering their livelihood, however there can be no excuse for using big vehicles in a threatening manner because one slip can cause carnage which would not only stop the protagonist, but all his fellows on that road, and in the case of a fatal, possibly all day(or night)
