had a nice trip to and from ipswich today (about 70 miles each way) and on the way back i stuck the cruise control on at 70mph and then put the trip computor on the one where it shows how many mph your getting and mine was showing 36.6 on average. is that good bad or average ?, i didnt think it was bad and my dad who drives a 4.0l jag said it was really good, what do you think?
btw aint this sort of journey what the scorpio was made for (ive got the 2.9, 24v cossie estate)

that is very good i get 20mpg around town and on a run i get around 28/29 on a 2.3 estate but that does include starting and stopping. on the car is moving it uses very little fuel it is the starting and stopping that kills the mpg

doing a steady speed on cruise at 70 should give you those figures.

If you want better, stick it on cruise at 50 - I got 40mpg   Smiley

Those are fantastic figures! 36.6mpg sounds very good and I would be pleased with that on a run.

I'm averaging 17/18 mpg around the town at the moment myself.

V6's are capable of unbeleiveable fuel economy if you treat them gently Smiley

My 3.2 XR4x4 went to a car show from Rye to Mansfield near Nottingham last year and on the way up, I burnt a complete tank of juice to cover just over 240 miles (ahem Smiley )

Being short of funds, the return journey was made at a little over 60 mph and i made point of keeping the rpm below 3000 (which is where my engine, like the 24v, came "on cam") and made the same return journey for less than half the amount Smiley  I assumed a "optimistic" gauge reading, but more gentle motorway work that week finally yielded 505 miles before i chickened out and filled up again Grin

Based on the sierras 70 litre tank... that was 16 mpg playing and 33 mpg on the return leg Wink

hi there

remember all mpg figures need to be quoted with the mph figure.

also the mpg figure will be a lot higher just after reseting the trip computer. this is based on, iirc, 500 miles.

so in reality, using all engine types, the scorpio will return between 16-20 mpg (12-18 mph) in town to 27-40 mpg (60-65 mph) on a m/way run.

Agree but I was stuck in 5 miles of road works (still there 6 weeks later - I got same figure). I prefer to exercise the engine properly given the chance  Wink

As Andrew says - I reset the trip computer when I set the cruise - otherwise you'll be just altering the stored average mpg (and mph)

Hi,

I've had 3 24v Scorpio's 1x BOA Saloon and 2x BOB Ultima Estates, all of them on a motorway run at 70-75mph normally return over 36mpg. The latest on I've just bought 2 weeks ago and drove from Peterborough to Plymouth, it averaged 39mpg on the trip computor for the 320+ mile journey, all Motorways which were very quiet as I left at 10:30pm and arrived at 3am with a stop on the way for a cup of coffee. The car had started with 3/4 of a tank of fuel and still showed 1/4 tank when I parked up at home so about 1/2 a tank of fuel used, 35 litres which would equate to 41.1mpg the trip computor showed 39mpg. Around town the car shows 26mpg. I don't press the accelerator peddle heavily as the 24v has all the torque nessary to accelerate with the meerest press of the accelerator peddle.

My 1st 24v The BOA saloon did go as low as 3-5mpg when reading 170mph this was when I was on holiday in Italy. The Italian motorway was still under construction, and near to completion. It was being used by my friends in south Italy to test their cars and motorbikes to the limit before the road was officially opened.

I hope to be able to achieve 650miles on a full tank of fuel averaging 40-42mpg. What is the furthest anyone elce has achieved from a full tank of petrol? I know Jeremy Clarkson recently managed to go from London to Edingburgh and back on a tank of petrol in a V8 mercedes and also he drove a Jaguar from France to Blackpool and could have achieved 900miles fromthe tank of petrol, yet Jaguar maintain that a full tank would only return 600miles.

Regards Chris

The best I've ever achieved with a 24v was 37 on a trip from Glasgow to Aberdeen but that was with the cruise control set at 55

I average 25mpg usually

Hmmm I think this rules out my 4 litre engine / high ratio diff theory then, thats the best mpg I've ever heard of for a 24v.

Have you removed all the doors, seats and glass??  Grin

Hopper,

been having a look at the info you sent me via pm re your 0-60 times, RPM vs MPH etc, and me thinking your 24v possibly being a 4.0

Now your RPM is showing exactly what it should be through the different speeds for a standard 24v

70 MPH  2500 RPM
80 MPH  2850 RPM etc

this would suggest the engine is a 2.9 and not a larger capacity otherwise we would expect the RPM to be lower for a set speed.

your 0-60 time is around 6 seconds, compared to the standard 24v time of 8.5 secs which is a big difference. similar or slightly better to what it would be when fitting a 4.27 diff to the 24v.

Your MPG is head and shoulders above every ones elses at an average of 40MPG compared to the usual max of 35ish for a 24v

So somethings wrong somewhere, you cant have great mpg and great performance, it isnt possible.

I'm assuming we can take your 0-60 time of 6 seconds as pretty accurate although i assume it was done with a stopwatch or similar and might be slightly out but close enough..

So... the only thing I can conclude is that you do have a 4.27 or similar diff fitted but that the original 24v drive pinion for the Vehicle Speed Sensor is still in place meaning your speedo is reading high..

With the 4.27 diff fitted and allowing for the Scorpios 10% "safety margin" in the speedo the actual speed when the speedo is showing 60 would be around 47MPH

This would also explain the exceptional MPG as the fuel computer is reading the correct amount of fuel being used and remaining but being given a milage figure 20-25% above what the car is actually physically doing.

This would make your actual MPG on a run around 30 and around town as 20, which is what I see on my 24v with the 4.27 diff when driving carefully.

The only way to check without having a look at the diff would be to check the speed against a satnav or against another car.

0-60 in 6 seconds  Huh....If the car were that quick off the mark, then it certainly wouldn't be so frugal as to do 40mpg+ on a run.....surely  Undecided
