Stuart,

The auto will do a fine job in yr tranny even for towing, just fit the biggest extra oil cooler you can fit and it'll be fine.  Wink

Also a really strong auto box can be built for the 24 valves using the guts out of a 4.0 litre explorer box. It has heavy duty sprags, gearsets, band servos and extra clutch plates in the drums   Grin A 2 litre scorp converter gets em off the line quicker with the tyres ablaze, due to its higher stall speed.

This is exactly what I did to my Cossie estate when the box blew up last year, and it's wicked.
Also for those building 4 litre Cossies, use a Explorer ECU and you'll get 5 speeds plus converter lock out of yr auto gearbox.  The fuelling won't be too far out, lambdas might correct it enuf for the 24v heads, if not use adjustable pressure reg and it surely will  Wink

Got some chassis welding to do this summer where the estates always rust, so will contact you nearer the time  Wink as I wanna fit a 2.3 diff while its all out  Grin so if you got a good 'un I'll be in the market lol

Regards Dave

Some good ideas there Dave, can you tell me  more about the 2.0 Torque convertor and how that works?

Is it a 2.3 diff you're after? the 3.91 ratio? I have one here for you Wink

using the 4ltr ecu? not thought of that and i have it, would it still work with a manual box on the back or would i still have the same problem of tricking it into thinking there is an auto box on it?

Hi guys,

Stuart:- yes its the 2.3 diff I require, how much to post it to me, will also need speedo drive gear from 2.3 auto to go with it. Will be in the market to buy it in about 3 weeks as I'm going away this week.

Right, converters... If you stand a 2.0 and a 24v converter next to one another you will notice that the vane angles, (ribs you can see around the circumference), are different.  This is because the stall speeds are different, the 2.0 one will allow the 24v revs to rise a bit more before it pulls away, thus making more torque available at the rear wheels on launches  Grin Grin Grin

Matt: If the ECU is from a manual Explorer no prob, otherwise yes it needs fooling but its easy...Just solder resistors in to the gearbox wiring connections to make it think that it has an autobox connected to it. This is the easiest way to do it, just use the same value resistors as the solenoids and speed sensor within the gearbox...no more confused ecu.com...simples as the meerkat says  Grin

Matt,

Are you building a 4.0 litre or a 3.0, cos when I built my 4x4 Sapphire Cossie years ago I used a BOB but fuelled it with a standard BOA ECU and BOA EDIS 6 ignition with a home made loom from Bits of BOB, BOA and XR4x4 sierra looms. Advantages are you can advance the ignition a few degrees by making a different crank sensor bracket, you only need 2 lambdas, and there is no autobox electronics as the BOA's used a fully hydraulic A4LD auto.  Fuelling was spot on, pulled like a train.  Grin

Dave

p.s. theres no PATS to mess with.  I'm gonna be doing a 4x4 escort exactly the same way using all the above with 4wd sierra floorpan and running gear and modded xr4x4 MT75 (diesel gearset), just as soon as I finish building my new workshop up here after easter  Grin Grin

Yeah reckon the Explorer ECU is the best way to go, but if it's gonna be 2wd I'd be using a24v Auto with Explorer auto guts and a 2.0 litre Scorp Converter with heavy duty lockup lining and splines.  The Explorer ecu with this combo would give you a 5 speed auto plus lockup and will launch like a manual lol  Grin

I'm still looking for a 4wd transit auto transfer setup so i can use same spec transmission in the Escort, but they are rarer than rocking horse ...  If I can get one tho the (modified) props will then match the Sierra 4x4 running gear.

Weve probably got one in an old unit somewhere, will have to brave the "Oil Shed" down sth lol.

If yr not in a hurry put my name on the diff and I'll sort ya out next month, unfortunately run out of readies as me Discovery has just cost me 1500 quid in bits, the b****r blew up big style last week coming over Rannoch Moor !!  (New Head, Gaskets etc plus Turbo unit oh and an Alternator 2 days B4... and this week Discs and pads on all 4 wheels plus rollbar links.  Sad Sad  Still must admit I've done bog all to it in the last 18 months apart from ragging it 650 miles up and down to Highlands on an almost weekly basis lol  Grin Grin

Rannoch Moor... that has to be one of the best roads in the world!! I love doing that one on the bike, although if you're not going on the train all you can do at the other end is use the loo!! Smiley

No rush, just let me know when you want it, how come you're not after a 4.27 diff?? Wink

Hi Dave,
i'm just about to fit the 24v in the transit, is it just a matter of swapping the torque convertor for the 2.0 one or is it a bit more involved than that?

Hi Stuart,

Sorry been busy last couple of days,

Yeah Rannoch is great, especially in / on something very quick  Grin

Dont want the all out acceleration of the 2.0 diff as I want to retain a modicum of "fuel economy" / high speed lower rev cruising so figured the 2.3 diff would be a good compromise  Wink

Yep just straight swap on the converter, just double check the length of the button in the centre on engine side it must be the same and there are 2 different lengths.  You dont need a tape measure its obvious by eye if they are different  Wink

Discovery all fixed (till summat else goes bang)  Grin

Travelling back to Highlands tomorrow nite for the Easter Gigs, then back down to the Transmission firm for 1 more week on Monday nite, then back up home until at least September (Thank God) LOL.

Gotta finish building my new workshop and get the Cossie fixed so I'll let ya know soon as I need the Diff.
PM me a price inc P&P and I'll know how many beer tokens to save up  Grin

Regards Dave
