Question.....In these days of computerisation and shared databases, if a car fails MOT with one garage, is it possible to take it to another (in the hope that it then passes) without the second garage knowing of the first garage failure? i.e. Does each garage share the same data regarding previous passes/failures/advisories (or am I just paranoid about Big Brother watching me)?

you're not paranoid  as far as I know they all share information. But if the second garage finds that the reason for failure in the first one is not relevant or something it may as well pass an MOT in a sec. garage with some advisories...

Similar situation to you Spectron,a friend of mine came round here very worried,his Bentley Mk 6 had failed on brakes,the tester said his front brakes were "non existent".I had to go with him to explain to the fellow that the brakes are operated through a mechanical servo on the side of the gearbox,and that the rear wheels must be turning for its operation.He gave us a Tapley meter,we went along the road,applied the brakes and the car almost stood on it's nose

That's true,but they still have to be tested that way,as do Rolls Royce up to the Shadow,it's surprising how many of them are still in use,built to last eh !

I remember several years ago, when i was running six Citroen Bx19 as cabs. The first one the council mechanic tested fail because he said "No handbrake working". Told him he was wrong, (he didn,t like that). Showed him in the yard that it did work. Back onto rollers, i, now keeping quiet as he puts rear wheels onto rollers. Sure enough no reading, brake not working. It was at this point i (very politly and humbley) that handbrake worked on FRONT wheels.

Recall a guy at work had a Citroen BX estate - parked it outside his house after a long motorway journey and went inside.
A few minutes later a neighbour knocked on the door and told him his car had rolled down the road into another car !
Seems the front discs were hot after the journey, he put the handbrake on...and as the discs cooled (contracted) the pads were no longer gripping the discs as tightly as they had been.
He always parked with the wheels turned into the kerb after that...

When I had my Granny 4x4 Saloon the MOT man had to use a Tapley meter instead of the conventional brake tester because it was permanent 4 wheel drive.

The handbrake on our old works discovery worked on the propshaft so couldn't be tested in the conventional wasy on the rollers.

d**n, and I used to live in Lancing, West Sussex lol.
If its any help, nationwide autocentres are offering half price MOT's through autotrader here http://www.autotrader.co.uk/CARS/mot/mot_centre.jsp
Got the missus' Passat Mot'd where I had mine done for £45 (I paid the full amount d'oh!) as there isn't a nationwide closer than about 25 miles.
Hopefully there might be one closer to anyone on here who needs one.
