24v 4x4 Scorpio Estate

I've finally managed to get round to starting this project! Previous Thread I have a Diesel estate to use as a donor which is currently having the engine/box removed ready to begin. I have plenty parts now from two Sierra XR4x4's (The 1990- 2.9 models, not the 2.8 ) The plan is to fit a 24v BOB from a Scorpio onto the alloy Sierra 4x4 front subframe (which fits the Scorpio perfectly) to the XR4x4 MT75 4x4 box and 4x4 running gear (sounds easy when you say it quickly) All info, ideas, contributions and ridiculing welcome Watch this space:

Stuart, I did exactly this conversion to a Sapphire a while back. Will help all I can just e mail or phone. Wiring will be yr biggest headache, but I used BOA management and made wiring loom from XR and BOA wiring. Oil drains into 4x4 sump a bit fiddly, but patience and a good ally welder makes a neat job of em Just starting my new project... 24v BOB 4wd Focus rally car. Any 4x4 bits you wanna sell I'm yr man, need floorpan / tunnel from XR4x4 plus all running gear sump etc. So anything you wanna get rid of, body shell etc lol gissa shout. Collection pref after Xmas as Im a Blue @rsed Fly at the mo Regards Dave

Do you think you will have to modify the front chassis rails to clear the front driveshafts as per the XR4x4 or not ?

I did 'em on the Saff easy peasy, 'bout half hour per side when there's no x member in it.

| I've heard of 4x4 conversions on 2wd Sierra's where the front chassis rails have been left unmodified

| Yeah lotsa ppl said that to me but they looked mighty close to me and mine was gonna be lowered so I took the safe route and did it, like I say wee bit of grinding with small angle grinder, bend up a bit of steel and weld it in, very easy. Shame about the shell, I know where theres a crossmember and a v6 sump wiv diff, poss a backend too, will be using Bilstein shox and springs but the basis of the project requires 4x4 Sierra floorpan and tunnell welding into Focus Shell

Would B more work, the transfer box hits the tunnell and the cradle bolts are different place, but if I can't get one a Scorpio one would B the next best thing, I'm assuming the back end is the same mountings etc ? Dont Scrap em just yet lol

Ebay seller Sierrashack may be worth contacting for a Sierra 4x4 floorpan About £60 or so.

| So you didn't actually notch the rails as per factory ? I'm keeping mine standard ride height so hopefully will get away with leaving the rails alone.

What about a spacer on the subframe to lower it slightly?

| Yeah, as per original. Also, when I say they look close, that was at std ride height before I fitted the lowered Koni kit. I cleaned off the rails on the old XR4x4 shell that I broke up, and did an exact copy. Like most chassis rails, the rails are double skinned. On the 2wd Saff shell when I ground the curve out from the first skin, the second skin underneath has the curve in it. You then weld in another piece on top of this to give the second skin the curve, soft disc grind the welds and underseal, its an exact copy of the 4wd shell rails then. It sounds hard but once you start grinding off the first skin (carefully) you'll see what I mean, it really is easy. So easy I wouldn't take the chance, and I wouldn't spacer the subframe either. Like I said half hour per side on a stripped out front end. HTH Dave
