Seized RHS handbrake mechanism (other braking tests perfectly even). Worst case scenario a new caliper, which would be no problem for me.
And to the disaster: on the left side, the chassis had a bad rust hole quite close to where the rear arm+subframe is. And from that spot a crack of 15 cm. It can be repaired, but we came to the conclusion the subframe might need to be taken off to get to it. Plus the fuel tank off for safety. 1-2 days work. The problem has been there for atleast a couple of years. It had been concealed with 1 cm layer of rust protection. I was too shocked to remember to take pictures...
Good thing is it can be repaired. Wallet will get lighter, that's for sure. But for what has been done with it, no way I'll break it.
Otherwise only positive remarks, suspension & steering, no problems, no advisories.

Usually a problem on the estate but i have seen a couple of saloons go in the same place too, hope it wont be off the road too long

Saloon it is. It had been so well concealed it had passed several MOT's before. It's not from my time. My own bet is more in the range of 2-3 days. Luckily the place is reasonably priced
Stuart, you are the subframe expert (at least when replacing springs). How much work is it (in worst case) to take off the subframe? It needs to drop by a foot I guess to completely weld it.

I usually drop it and leave the propshaft, exhaust and rear brake flexi pipes etc still attached, you only have the length of the flexipipes to play with but it wil give you enough room to weld, especially if you only need to get at one side.
basically i do the following:
lower the exhaust by unhooking the rubbers
three bolts at either side of the car holding the subframe to the body
Bolt or bolts (depending on which mount type it has) that hold the diff to the body
rear antiroll bar
shock absorber bolts
You probably SHOULD remove it completely but I've always managed doing it this way and it saves a LOT of time.
Never removed the fuel tank, although it is pretty close depending on where exactly you will be welding.
but the fuel pipes themselves actually run down that left side chassis rail where you will be welding, not difficult to pop them off but the clips usually break, get the cable ties out

I had a similar problem on my estate some while back and it was repaired,in the way Stuart describes, by a local garage on a Saturday morning. The rear brake lever can sometimes be released by using a wrench on the lever and plenty of WD40. If you undo the bolt holding the arm on to the caliper slightly,say two or three turns and then tap it up and down that also helps. Go easy and don't fully release the bolt or you'll have a job to re-fit it without releasing the handbrake cable from its fixing points under the car. They are tucked under the heat shields and are just a pest to get at and release. If the WD40 fails then a replacement caliper is the answer.
Go to the Problems page and look at the first post. There are a set of Stuarts photographs there which show the internals of a caliper (my old one). The shaft to which the handbrake lever is fixed CANNOT be lifted out because of the small 'peg' at the bottom. It is this 'peg' which actuates the main shaft when the handbrake lever is turned.

Thanks Simmo for the advice. I had a braking power of 2,0/2,0kN rear so I assume handbrake overhaul with a kit is sufficient in case it doesn't release.
