Started my gearbox oil change

11am. Started my oil change, finally got it up on 4 axel stands, Looked for the oil cooler pipes on the gearbox, found them slightly above on the box but found it near impossible to take off, so leaving that for the time being. took that bar off that goes across the car just under the box 4 nuts 16mm spanner. Loosened the 20 odd nuts 13mm spanner, untill the oil started dripping. Leaving it like that for a while then i'll go back and undo them a bit more.......... more to come....

Thought i'd clean the MAF while i was waiting, took the MAF off and the air filter. And under the filter there is some Brown oily greasy gunky stuff in the bottom of the air filter box. Any ideas what that is or means........

Maybe I've missed something, but what about disconnecting then on the radiator end?

Thought you had to disconect them from the box end, but if it's ok to do it from the rad end that'll be easier..... Cheers

But be very careful with the metal pipes, apparently they're alloy and a bit fragile (?)

I'll agree with that, probably needs new filter in the airbox where the oil breather comes in. You can make a new one from a kitchen sponge

2 pm ...Thanks it looks as if it's coming from the top hose that goes into the filter box, Now i've undone all the bolts from the gearbox pan and gently rocked it bit to get some more oil out, but it seems a bit dificult to get the pan off, do i have to take the oxygen sensors off to get the pan off, or can it slide towards the front of the car............. bet you can tell i havn't done this before.....
P.S my smileys don't work........

Having trouble getting one of the H02 sensors off it's the drivers side, was wondering if it's a RH thread i.e turn clockwise to undo... the passenger side one came off easy........

Just got the gearbox pan off with a bit of jiggerling about. Now for the filter. Dosn't seem to be a lot of oil. There's about 2 litres in the catch tray and a about a litre on the floor. Think i've soaked up about half a liter in my clothes..........Smiley

4.30..... Took the filter off 10mm spanner that was easy enough and some more oil came out. cleaned out the pan all looked ok except for some grey sludge around the magnetic strip thats in the pan. and found some metal slugs in there , presume they came off the gasket, i would imagine there some kind of spacer so you don't flatten the gasket when putting the pan back on.........

my cossie had the gunk, if your car isnt used much some condensation forms on the rocker covers inside, just squeeze the hose out and as said clean or replace the filter in the air box

Pretty normal for more oil to come out when disturbing pan and filter, just draining it rarely gets the last bit

Don’t forget to check the length of the bolt, it may be too long for the later filter that has a thinner mounting boss.

7.00..... put the filter back on but i think i got a dodgy torque wrench, set it for 11Nm and it snapped the bolt. Luckily enough it snapped right on the head of the bolt and managed to get the remainder out. Found another bolt 6mm a little bit shorter but the original bolt is a bit too long...... And put the pan and gasket on just got to tighten the bolts up now...........  Seemed to have lost my watch somewhere along the line Huh

Hope it's not inside the gearbox! Grin

Add washers?

Sounds like your bolt "bottomed out" in the hole

Appendix
Doubt it's very high strength just to hold a filter on so probs wouldn't take much to snap it

Hello finished the gearbox, 2 days of hell don't think i'll do it again, started filling up the gearbox put about 6 litres in and it started leaking at the pan, i forgot to torque the pan up, so torqued the pan and still leaking, so i stopped filling it run the engine for a while, checked the oil level, and needed some more so topped up with a little more, checked for leaks, none at this point, run the engine each time putting it in R then D, and kept checking the level untill it was topped up. Leak seemed to be cured. Also while i was topping up i did leave the oil cooler pipe off letting any dirty oil that was left in there to come out, and when it started to run red, put the hose back on and continued to fill up, then took it for a drive ( felt a lot better ) got home checked for leaks and checked for oil level, no leaks and a bit of a top up , All OK ............... Also made my little sponge for the air filter ( jonnycab ) . Cheers everyone for the help......Glad thats done. PS Found my watch but lost a 13mm spanner
