Rich, been to Top Gear and had a great day. You will have to queue when getting in as they check your pass, tell you where to park and then it's a loooong walk to the actual studio/warehouse where the show is made. It's a long day and several scenes are retaken again and again until the producer is happy. Take a camera and something for the stars signatures as they meet and greet during breaks. ENJOY    Lee

Did you notice 35 mpg for the diesel? Someone was asking elsewhere what this should be, think it was about that, so is it then

From the Norwegian comparo between the Mercedes E230 Classic, the Opel/Vauxhall Omega 2.0 16V GL and the Ford Scorpio 2.3 Ghia:

Driver's environment: Scorpio 5, Merc 5, Omega 4, narrow win for the Ford, only complant being poor trip computer design.

Roominess: Merc 5, Omega 4, Scorpio 3. Complaints re the Ford goes to restricted head room for passengers (?!) and smallish trunk. Still, all cars were considered plenty roomy enough for 5 adults.

Comfort: Merc 5, Scorpio 4, Omega 3. Although the points suggest big differences, the concensus was that they were all fairly similar, differing mostly in detail. Ford considered to be the most silent by a noticeable margin and also offering the best seats. Suspension was not as competent as that of the Merc but better than the Omega most of the time. Over minor ripples, however, the Ford gave the harshest ride.

Handling: Scorpio 5, Merc 5, Omega 4. Sporty handling with little body roll, agile and lite steering gave Ford the victory. Merc felt heavier despite being 250 lb lighter and had slightly less precise steering, but it could corner a bit harder than the Ford before losing grip. Similar brake quality for all contestants.

Engine and drive train: Merc 5, Scorpio 5, Omega 3. Best engine in the Ford when it comes to silence and vibrations. Merc came with automatic transmission that annoyed slightly on steep hills when it failed to make up its mind as to which gear to stay in, but the engine clearly gave the most power of the trio. Manual transmissions of the other two were not considered marvellous by any means - rather mediocre.

Performance and fuel consumption: Merc 5, Scorpio 4, Omega 4. Despite having an auto tranny, the Merc was clearly the quickest under acceleration. Although listed with a 0-100 kph (0-62mph) time of 10.4 seconds from Mercedes, it actually did the exercise in just 9.3 seconds! The Ford took an even 10 seconds, the Omega 10.9. The Merc drank the least fuel at 7.8 l / 100 km followed by the Omega with 8.1 and the Ford with 8.6. How often do you find the auto to be the fastest AND the most frugal?!

Price and equipment: Omega 5, Scorpio 4, Merc 2. With similar levels of equipment, the Omega costed NOK 330,000, the Scorpio NOK 375,000 and the Mercedes NOK 530.000. They could have equipped a Scorpio 2.0 GLX to beat the Omega. And a Merc E200 would have saved about NOK 70,000, but it would still be clearly the most costly.

Winner: Mercedes - if you could afford it. High second hand prices and overall best performance and quality managed to offset the high price, according to the testers. The Ford gave almost similar levels of luxury at a much lower price, but used more fuel and didn't quite have the refinement of the German counterpart. They also weren't sold on the design and feared low second-hand prices (they were proved right). Right off the showroom floor, however, the Scorpio gave the most car for your cash. The Omega was also considered to be good value for money and its plainer design would likely hold its value better (it did).

All I know of is the cassette stash box (I presume it is) between the front seats, but have used it as a cup holder Grin

Wonder if it could have its tray ripped out, insulate it, fit cooling elements and make a new tray for it so that you could keep a couple of soda cans cool
