Old Halfords torque wrench HELP!
« on: Nov 3rd, 2010, 8:37am »

Well I bought a couple of Halfords torque wrenches about 10ish years ago & both have been very good I must admit.

However last week I managed to break one.

Now I am pretty sure I wouldn't have bought them if they was not part of the pro range so off I went with it thinking I could get a new one.

Turns out that nobody had any idea if it was a pro product or not but after some discussion it was decided maybe not.

So I got onto Halfords HQ for the definitive answer.

It appears they are none the wiser either.

I now know it was a pro product with a lifetime warrantee however I need proof.

I am now at the stage after some argueing that if I can produce an advert or anything to show it was a pro product I get a new wrench, if not then I don't!

Thing is the receipts are thermal so after 4 years or so they are unreadable, so that's long gone!
I have none of the orginal packageing either, well I wouldn't would I!!!!!!

It can measure 60 - 330 NM
Has a plastic handle with Halfords imprinted into it.
& is reversible.

Picture here: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b228/DavidHoward/Forum/Torque1.jpg

Anyone got any old packaging, flyer or anything that I can show Halfords to get the new wrench I am entitled to!

Iwent onto Google for about 5 minutes, just put in:  'Halfords Old Torque Wrenches'.   Got loads of results, and pictures, and forums talking about the product.   Sure you might get something off of that.

Oh if it was that easy.  Roll Eyes

I spent 3 hours the other night looking through that lot.

Any posts after 2006 talk about the new completely different wrenches.

Could find no useable info on any pre 2006 posts I looked at!

Basically I need to find someone with one of these wrenches with a box or receipt that is readable.

If it goes to 330Nm which equates to just over 240ft/lbs then surely that would be a'Professional' instrument. Most DIY wrenches go nowhere near that which is why we are always mentioning the fact when dealing with the torque for rear wheel bearings which needs to be 200ft/lbs. Is it 3/4 drive as again most DIY are 1/2" ?.  HTH.

But.   To get a new Torque Wrench that was good at it's job would only cost about £100.   The new Halfords alternative is I think £75.   Both would last another 10 years probably.   In my opinion, these two prices are but a pimple on the Moon for running a Scorpio compared to running a little tin-can on wheels.  Surely we run a car like this and pay the price?

To be honest I think you would be lucky even if you did have proof of purchase.  Lifetime is expected life of the equipment. Quite how long that is in Halfords eyes is a guess.  Also their guarantee does not cover moving parts.  Worth trying though Wink

Well I have found other owners who say it was a Pro product with a life time warranty but still looking for actual proof as they all don't have any either!

They have already tryed the old 10 year thing which is rubbish as that would be a 10 year gurantee.
So they have backed down from that arguement Grin

The wrench has snapped so no moving parts.

They have already said they will exchange it for the new version if I can show them proof that the wrench was covered as they are playing dumb & saying nobody at HQ can identify which wrench it is & if it has the lifetime warrantee or not.

That's why I need a box or anything that came from Halfords stating it.

The wrench itself has no markings except Halfords on it!

Hmmmmmmmm, Halfords, The Blighters.   You ought to tell them that you have been on numerous sites complaining about this, don't they realise they could be loosing a number of sales because now some people might not believe they will honour their own warranty?   For Instance, now, I would not buy one of there products!

Mate I guess it depends on your store but I would recommended Halfords tools!

You wouldn't believe the trouble I used to have with Snap-On & there stuff is 3 times the price of Halfords.

It's all sorted now.

Spoke to the guys on the Car Mechanic mag forum.

The editor remembered they did a test on the wrench in 2001.

Got a scan of the review that stated the wrench was a pro product.

Took my bit of proof in to the local store & they gave me a new £80 replacement & a new receipt!

Job done.

I know more about that wrench now than Halfords!

Like they was made by Britool between 1999 - 2006.
There were 3 models 70NM / 200NM / 330NM
All was Pro products with life time warranty
etc etc

Was a bloody good wrench that to be honest, I used it as a breaker bar & totally abused it!

However it only ever needed recalibrating once.

Would recommend a Halfords torque wrench to anyone & once they knew for sure it was covered they replaced it no problem.

The new wrenches are also made by Britool, wonder if this one will last 10 years before I break it & get another new replacement.

However be warned make a scan of the receipt as within 5 years it will be blank & head office are now asking stores to ensure a receipt is produced before a replacement is given.

hi dave

great result!

i agree with you re the quality of the tools. I've  never had a issue with even the 'normal' range, although I'm only using them for general car maintenance.
