Exploding Windows

Last Saturday, I was out weeding in the garden (my least favourite task on earth!) All of a sudden the drivers window on my Suzuki Jeep suddenly explodes into a million pieces! Just as if it had been taken out by a high powered rifle! Now my suspicious mind initially assumed a stone/bird/airgun pellet but no sign of anything inside or out. Indeed had I not been less than 20ft away when it happened and come home to find it instead, I would have been ranting at the local youth again! The car interior had a plastic cover over it (which caught the glass), outside the driveway is flat stone between the car and the house and nothing to be seen lying around, other than some glass... It looks like the glass just exploded in place, some falling inside, some outside but not thrown particularly far in either direction. A quick Google reveals it happens quite often, causes ranging from imperfect glass, rusting window rails, twisted panels, audio frequencies (opera singer breaking wineglass effect), heat, cold..you name it... Anyone seen or heard of a similar thing?

Happened to me more years ago than I care to remember! It was on an Austin 1300 and I was sitting in it at the time. Thought I'd been shot. Tony

Yeah, have seen this quite a lot, The most usual cause is rusting rails, also bonded screens can crack if the aperture starts to rust Dave

Hi to you all. Yes,but not exactly an exploding window. Some years ago I went over to Middlesbrough to view and test drive (my now) 1997 Volvo T5 CD Auto. I went back for it the next morning on the train from Wigan. During the night there had been an exceptionally hard frost and the bonded & laminated windscreen had cracked from one side to the other, full width. I drove home with it and had a new screen installed on the Monday at Auto Glass Windscreens.

Window rail looks to be rusting in the centre.. no harm to it, the cars 24 years old and gets a hard life.. in fact its been on its roof a few times which probably won't have helped the situation
