Cash buyers on ebay

Hi, I've just sold a BMW for my friend on ebay for 14k and the guy wants to pay cash on collection!

This sounds very dodgy to me but does anyone have any suggestions as to how to respond without losing the sale? Thanks in advance.  Matt.

Just say"welcome friend" take the money, check it,pass it to your assistant to take inside the building, then give him the keys, and wave bye-bye.It's that simple  Cool

I wouldn't take cash, it could easily be fake, or most of it could be fake...I wouldnt know the difference

Get him to come during banking hours go to the bank with him and pay it into your account.

I think they may ask what its for as its over 10k due to money laundering regulations? not sure though (Max I usually spend on a car is about £500) Grin

BUT most of all if I was buying a car I wouldnt be carrying 14k in cash around on route to get it!

Plenty stories around about people getting beaten up and robbed going to buy cars with even a couple of thousand cash.

We were all in the boozer one night, one of the lads sold his Granada to a couple of undesirables for cash, when he was suitably slewed they offered him a lift home Roll Eyes I insisted on taking him home, but he declined saying he would go home with his new pals.
He was back in the boozer a couple of nights later minus the car the cash and a couple of front teeth  Cry
Highlander's bank visit is a sound move if you are unsure about checking the cash, however it is not unknown for someone to buy an expensive car for cash if that's the way they deal.We must realise that people who wish to avoid being robbed by HMRC do deal in cash, and keep it in a safer place than a bank.

True, I used to work with a guy who had a lovely wee farmhouse in the countryside..

he got a knock on the door one day and someone made him a GOOD offer on it which he accepted.

The guy came back the next day with £250k in cash!  Grin

Different selling a house though compared to a car

Hmmm, I always buy in cash, I spose the most I've taken is £11250 for a triumph Rocket 111 back in 2005.
Took my Lad as back-up mind!
Mind you Stuart, if they came with those Scottish notes...I wouldn't know what they looked like, if they were right or wrong, but that is puely my ignorance on the subject..Do you have 3 different sorts?

Thanks for the replies, I suppose meeting the buyer at a bank where the teller can count it there and then is the best option, and they would be able to check whether it is genuine or not.  Given that I will have banked his money, how does he know that I am going to give him the car keys? How can I reassure him on that? Thanks again.

Am I missing something here? is the car not drivable or at a different location?

Can't you just give him the keys once he hands the money over and its been checked??

Drive the actual car to the bank to deposit the cash?

Write him a receipt stating the cash deposited in the bank will be the payment for the car then both sign it beforehand?

i've never handed anyone cash yet and they havent given me the keys... and i've bought a lot of cars Grin

Short of arranging a third party to hold the car and the cash until everyone is happy i don't see what else you can do really

Thanks guys maybe I am just paranoid but there is no way I would hand over 14k of cash without knowing for certain I was going to get the car key!  I used to work in the retail trade and we once paid 10k upfront by bank transfer for a shipment of 20k of goods, which never ever got despatched!

Could the bank teller be the third party? Give them the log book and keys and tell them to give them to the buyer after the money has been verified to be real? Could also help as proof that you got the money selling the car.

Well he never contacted me again after I suggested we give the cash to a bank clerk for checking and he has since failed to answer about 5 chasing emails.

How do I cancel the sale on ebay, and do I have pay ebay's fees?  Am I entitled now to give him negative feedback and can I put the car back on ebay?

What a plonker he is but there are alot of them about on ebay.

I think you can report him to ebay as a non payer and as a result I believe they let you relist it for free. Mind you it is a very long time since I had to do anything like that.

I suspect you have just dodged a large wad of counterfeit notes Grin

report it to ebay as a non paying bidder and you will get fees etc refunded or relist it free

Unfortunately ebay in their wisdom withdrew the sellers option to leave negative feedback, you can only leave positive.
