We have a house on the Southside of Malta, and are there regularly.   There is also other regular visitors to The Grand Harbour in Valletta, the Gal is pictured texting!   A quick pic for those that haven't seen the famous Ship Upright!   I hope this doesn't offend anyone, it's not my intention.

Standing alongside a ship of that size really does put things into perspective doesn't it, I stood at the side of the QEII some years ago when it was docked in Southampton, needless to say I was gob-smacked.

The biggest ships I have ever been on are the IOM Ferry 'Lady of Mann' during the mid to late 70's and more recently the Ben-my-Chree and the 'Sea Cat' aka as the vomit comet by the locals.

I think this accident brings into question the basic issue of design safety of these vessels - it was fortunate that it happened in shallow water and the loss of life appears to be very low. If this has been in deep water and the ship had hit an iceberg I can't help thinking we would be looking at something a lot worse than the Titanic disaster  Undecided

It's like a big floating hotel ~ what would happen to a big hotel on land in an earthquake, for example? Much the same I imagine

Yea its a big ship, but no means the biggest, even by cruise ship standards

Biggest ive seen was one of the cargo ships out in the channel, the shipping containers looked like lego blocks

They have a very low centre of gravity....in the bottom are engines, machinery, water/fuel tanks & a very thick hull to weigh the boat down, a bit like a Double Decker bus  Wink

For anyone that is wondering......I meant that it's a bit like a double decker bus, in that it's centre of gravity is very low down & it's difficult to roll. But y'all knew that anyway.....right ?  Wink
