Suggestions for Cheap Estate Auto?

Hi all
As some of you know we have a 24v that is used for dropping my dad off at work then the running round (shopping ect) before picking him up we are noticeing the petrol costs  Shocked   Smiley
So I am Hopefully going to start a new job soon and i am going to buy the 24v from my mom and dad for the shows (My first Car Grin) and with the cash they are going to buy a smaller cheap estate, well thats the plan anyway. It would be perfect if we could get a scorpio 2.5 diesel BUT my mom would be driving and she is not good with manuals  Grin she passed in a manual but because we have only had Granadas and Scorpios (all autos) she has sort of lost her touch Cheesy I know finding a Scorpio Auto Diesel would be VERY hard so we are looking for a reliable diesel estate Auto. Any suggestions. Ive said Escort? Focus? trying to keep it Ford  Grin Only for runnig around so nothing special. NOT MONDEOS PLEASE SORRY IF YOUVE GOT ONE BUT I REALLY DONT LIKE THEM.
Thanks all

Daniel, why would you want a Diesel ?......The 2.3 isn't much less fuel efficient than the 2.5 diesel & if you take into consideration the cost of fuel (petrol is cheaper) & the increased servicing costs & problems associated with turbo diesel engines, then owning a petrol car will probably cost you the same or probably less in the long run  Wink

I'm a licensed taxi driver (home counties) & always stick to petrol cars. I once owned a Mondeo turbo diesel & although it was great on fuel, when it went wrong (which was quite often) it cost fortunes to fix....new turbo, 2 fuel pumps in 3 years, new injectors etc  Roll Eyes

Some other cabbies that I work with ask me why I refuse to replace my old gas guzzling 2.3 Scorpio 'behemoth' with something more economical.
My reply....Just because a car is good on fuel, doesn't mean to say it's cheap to maintain  Wink

My 2.3 now has 252,000 miles on the clock & is still going strong & last year (covered another 25,000 miles) cost me less than £200 in parts to maintain  Smiley

Daniel, if your interested, my other 2.3 Ultima estate will be going on Autotrader soon. 96K miles, full service history, fully loaded with reverse sensors & tow bar. MOT till 03/04/13 & tax till 31/03/13. Only faults are the sunroof is jammed shut (stops water ingress  Wink) & airbag light flashes on occasionally, but goes out when you give the dash a good slap  Grin

You are in the wrong job JC,you should have been a salesman ! Grin However you are 100% correct in what you say,as you know I am a long time (now retired) limousine operator and haulier, and have of course been staggered by the cost of small diesel repairs,if an injector pump, turbo or particularly modern injectors go pop you are forced to replace them from suppliers who have you by the nuts  Roll Eyes As well as fuel system components the general cost of everything diesel is always much higher than petrol.
I kept one 2.3 Coleman Milne Scorpio limo which I had converted to autogas,it cost me £1500 which when the sums are done doesn't take long to recoup,in the meantime the engine oil doesn't get dirty and the exhaust is much sweeter. The car does 20mpg on gas at 68p,and 26mpg on petrol currently at £1.34.
So there you are Dan,consider that, but make sure the car you buy is a goodun  Cool

Just to add.....It has recently been proved in some laboratory somewhere  Roll Eyes, that exposure to diesel fumes causes cancer.....I'm not suprised !!  It stinks !!  Tongue

If you ever sat inside Victoria bus station 20 years ago, waiting for the your particular Green Line coach, then you'll know what I mean when I say that if you suffered from asthma, then you'd probably be dead by the time the bus arrived......The bus fumes in that place would have blackened air & pollen filters in minutes & probably given your lungs a lovely (30 years worth of smoking) black inner lining within the hour  Undecided

Car manufacturers now seem to turning away from diesel & more toward petrol again. Ford have a new Focus & Fiesta that have a very small 1.0L petrol engine & large turbo that is capable of doing nigh on 70 mpg.

I think we can safely say that the 'bell has tolled' for the diesel engine as far as passenger vehicles are concerned & that it will most likely go back to becoming just an agricultural/hard working vehicle engine  Wink

Grin Grin Grin Great news! Not about the dangers of it Shocked  but the way people are turning away from it  Grin I did read about the 1.0L engine ford are doing in performance ford mag sounds good if it means diesels die (apart from the few scorps Wink) or get back on the farm or whatever.
